This is an image of IC 1396, taken from my backyard. It is a large emission nebula in Cepheus, roughly 2,400 light years away. The glowing red gas is mostly hydrogen, while the blue areas show oxygen. Both are shaped by the radiation from a hot central star. Within the complex, dense dark clouds of gas and dust stand out against the brighter nebulosity. The most prominent of these is the Elephant’s Trunk, a long pillar where new stars are forming. The bright orange star towards the upper right is Mu Cephei, also known as Herschel’s Garnet Star, one of the largest red supergiants visible to the naked eye.

This is the result of many bad legacy decisions taken by UKRI hastily and without proper consultation, overseen by a government department that no longer exists. Surely the new @andyburnham government will want to take time to review this.
🚨 NEW: The UK’s largest telescope for studying space is now set to close after the Government pulled its funding It supported various Apollo missions and tracked Soviet rockets in the Cold War

Just finished my first proper mono narrowband image! North America & Pelican Nebulae (NGC 7000 + IC 5070) in SHO. Shot with the RedCat 51 + ASI2600MM + Antlia 2.5nm filters from Macclesfield. Learning project under difficult summer skies, feedback welcome! Full resolution on AstroBin: app.astrobin.com/u/Shaun?i=a… @WilliamOptics1 @zwoastro @antlia_filter

🌌 Fighting Dragons of Ara (NGC 6188) My third and final image from @NebulaPhotos astrophotography workshop in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile 🇨🇱. It was an incredible experience. I learned so much from Nico! These dramatic dark dust pillars look like two cosmic dragons locked in battle, sculpted by intense stellar winds from young stars under the pristine dark skies of the Atacama Desert. The bright blue Dragon’s Egg (NGC 6164) glows perfectly below ✨ Full resolution and details on Astrobin: app.astrobin.com/u/Shaun?i=c… Equipment: • Telescope: @WilliamOptics1 RedCat 51 • Mount: @zwoastro AM5N • Camera: @zwoastro ASI294MC Pro • Filters: @Optolong_filter L-Ultimate (Ha+OIII dual narrowband) + Antlia ALP-T dual narrowband (SII + OIII + H-alpha) for full SHO palette. #Astrophotography

🌌 Vela Supernova Remnant My second image from @NebulaPhotos astrophotography workshop in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile 🇨🇱. I highly recommend his workshops! The intricate glowing filaments of this supernova remnant, lit up under the pristine dark skies of the Atacama Desert. What’s left of a massive star that exploded ~11,000 years ago ✨ Full resolution and details on Astrobin: app.astrobin.com/u/Shaun?i=i… Equipment: • Telescope: @williamoptics RedCat 51 • Mount: @zwoastro AM5N • Camera: @zwoastro ASI294MC Pro • Filters: @optolongfilter L-Ultimate (Ha+OIII dual narrowband) #Astrophotography

🌌 Carina Nebula in stunning SHO palette, captured under the pristine Bortle 1 skies of Chile! Dark skies were unbelievable: almost zero light pollution, crystal-clear air, and the Milky Way blazing overhead every night. First narrowband image of the trip. L-Ultimate + Antlia ALP-T filters brought out rich Sulfur, Hydrogen & Oxygen detail in the Keyhole region. 7h 55m total integration. The California Nebula (NGC 1499)! 🌌 This expansive emission nebula in Perseus, resembling California's outline and illuminated by the hot star Xi Persei, sits about 1,000 light-years from Earth and spans roughly 100 light-years. Captured from my Bortle 5 backyard.

The California Nebula (NGC 1499)! 🌌 This sprawling emission nebula in Perseus, shaped like California and glowing from the hot star Xi Persei, lies about 1,000 light years from Earth and spans roughly 100 light years in length. Captured from my Bortle 5-6 backyard in narrowband SHO palette: 30 x 600s Ha/OIII (L-Ultimate @Optolong_filter ) + 36 x 600s SII/OIII (Antlia ALP-T 3nm @antlia_filter) 11 hours integration. Shot with @WilliamOptics1 RedCat51 WIFD, @zwoastro ASI294MC Pro camera on AM5N mount.📸✨ What's your top filter combo for light-polluted skies? Share tips! 🚀

A future where we are out there among the planets and the stars is so inspiring!
Optimus will prepare for the arrival of humans on Mars. Then the first humans to arrive on Mars, the pioneers, will have a difficult task. It will take men and women with an iron will and unwavering faith in the future. But the goal is so beautiful!

🌌 My first astrophotography image – NGC 7000 (North America Nebula)! Captured with a RedCat51, ASI294MC Pro, 30 x 180s subs, no filter (filters on the way 📦). I’m thrilled with the result but eager to improve! Any tips on exposure, processing, or how to make the most of filters when they arrive? 🌟 #astrophotography #NGC7000 #SpacePhotography #Astronomy
