What does it mean to be a light unto the world?

The Savior made it clear that part of being a light was to let others “see your good works” (Matthew 5:16).

Sometimes in our efforts to be humble we do not appropriately let people know that we are members of the Lord’s Church and follow His teachings.

There are many ways to do this. I shared during yesterday's worldwide devotional that living lives of integrity and virtue will be most important. Who you are is the key.

Light is most powerful when it is consistent and reliable—such as a lighthouse or a candle in a dark room. It does not matter if your light feels small. “Out of small things proceedeth that which is great” (Doctrine and Covenants 64:33).

As we consider how to be a light, there is one path that is most sure: It is to learn of the Savior and strive to become like Him.

My counsel to you is to focus on Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. He is the Light of the World, the true source of light and peace.

One of the simplest and most powerful teachings of Jesus Christ is “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9). I find it noteworthy that Jesus Christ didn’t say blessed are the peace lovers or the peaceful. He talked about being peacemakers—makers of peace. When we make peace, it is not only conflict resolution in its highest form, but we reflect our divine nature as children of God.

Just as a tree draws strength and nourishment from its roots, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is strengthened when its members are firmly grounded in principles that foster faith and discipleship.

Many of us, in moments of personal anguish, feel that God is far from us. The pavilion that seems to intercept divine aid does not cover God; it occasionally covers us. God is never hidden, yet sometimes we are, covered by a pavilion of motivations that draw us away from God and make Him seem distant and inaccessible. Our own desires, rather than a feeling of “Thy will be done” (Matthew 6:10), create the feeling of a pavilion blocking God. God is not unable to see us or communicate with us, but we may be unwilling to listen or submit to His will and His time. We remove the pavilion when we feel and pray, “Thy will be done” and “in Thine own time.” His time should be soon enough for us since we know that He wants only what is best. The Lord’s delays often seem long; some last a lifetime. But they are always calculated to bless. They need never be times of loneliness or sorrow or impatience. Although His time is not always our time, we can be sure that the Lord keeps His promises. For any of you who now feel that He is hard to reach, I testify that the day will come that we all will see Him face to face. Artwork: "Faith is Holding Both" by Jenna Conlin

We are back again our dear friends this winter. We plan to visit, donate and share lunch with our friends at Flowers of Hope in Budiriro 1. While the immediate impact for the 42 on site will be the lunch, we are gently appealing for funds to make our visit more impactful.

True faith is focused in and on the Lord Jesus Christ and is a principle of action, trust, and power. As we act in accordance with the truths of the Savior’s gospel and trust in His promises, we are blessed with the spiritual capacity to “rise up” and press forward through the challenges of mortality while experiencing the joys His gospel makes possible in our lives.

Enduring to the end is linked inextricably to the spiritual gift of charity. Enduring to the end is not merely a relentless determination to grit our teeth, hold on to the limits of our physical strength and mental capacity, and push through the challenges and adversities of mortal life; it is so much more than that. Enduring to the end is the joyous quest of a lifetime—a pressing forward with faith in Jesus Christ in a gradual process of trusting in and receiving help from our Savior to become more like Him. As our love for Him grows ever stronger and deeper, we can be blessed to receive spiritual perspective, the Lord’s empowering grace, and exceedingly great and indescribable joy.

In the newest episode of the Friend to Friend series released Sunday, May 24, Elder Gerrit W. Gong, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, his wife, Susan, and the Primary General Presidency help children of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints understand the role of prophets in inviting all to come unto Christ. “The Lord loves us. He wants us to know His truth and things that will make us happy. So, He gives us living prophets,” said Elder @GerritWGong in the broadcast titled “Prophets Guide Us to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ,” available online and on YouTube.  “Having prophets on the earth today is evidence of God's great love for all of His children,” added Sister Gong. “They teach us what the Savior would want us to do, and they point us to Jesus Christ.” Learn more on Church Newsroom. newsroom.churchofjesuschrist…

The purpose of making covenants is to draw us closer to our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. We are beloved sons and daughters of God, and He desires that we experience joy in this life. Our covenants can serve as constant reminders of these sacred truths.

Will you please remember what the Lord told Samuel? “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).
