In 1994, Haiti was warned about the consequences of reducing import tariffs without protecting local farmers. The warning wasn't coming from outsiders. It was written into the Aristide government's own economic plan. As you can see, the document called for a possible transition period of up to seven years and support for Haitian agriculture before exposing farmers to greater foreign competition. Those precautions were effectively brushed aside. By 1995, rice tariffs had fallen to just 3%, without the promised protections being adequately implemented. More than 30 years later, Haiti is still living with the consequences. I bring this up because I see us making the same mistake today. People are so desperate for security that anyone questioning Bukele's deployment risks being dismissed as someone who doesn't want the gangs defeated. But what happens if we ignore those concerns? What exactly has our government agreed to? What are the long-term political, financial and security implications? What will Haiti be left with when the Salvadorans leave? In 1994, the risks were recognized, but the safeguards were not respected. We cannot afford to repeat that mistake. We need to learn to listen to one another, especially when the questions make us uncomfortable. Those who support the deployment and those who question it may disagree on the risks, but they ultimately want the same thing: a safer Haiti. Listening creates room for compromise, and compromise allows us to build policies and laws that address more than just the immediate crisis. Decisions shaped by different perspectives, proper debate, and mutual concessions are more likely to earn public trust and produce lasting results. Haiti has suffered enough from decisions made without meaningful consensus. We should be trying to get this one right together.

📊Data gaps make crises harder to detect and address. Reduced humanitarian data coverage leaves vulnerable populations less visible, weakens early warning systems, and makes anticipatory action more difficult and costly. 🔗Learn more in this recent blog by @CreoleBauer and @swomamo: on.cgiar.org/489j2fM @CGIAR @WFP @IFPRI_Africa

Food crises are growing more complex, while funding for critical data systems is falling. Today in Rome, partners launched the Intentional Data Community with support from @RockefellerFdn to strengthen existing systems and help countries act earlier. After 7 years as a geospatial data scientist, I quit my job. I'm going all in to tell you stories hidden in satellite data I've worked on cocoa and coffee supply chain monitoring, near real time flood maps with radar satellites that see through clouds, mapped trees in 3D to prevent wildfires and built pipelines that analyse crop yields at the scale of the US But I've always kept going back to telling stories I've done 70+ interviews of data scientists, CEOs, engineers, policy makers and artists all trying to better understand the impact of data, maps & satellites images in our lives I've made videos seen by hundreds of thousands of people on how satellite & maps work. So now I'm going all in I believe the worlds need more people telling stories, of people; that statistics and data changes the world, but people and stories are what resonate. A few weeks ago I already put a video out with @OurRadiantEarth about millions of people being miscounted in Argentina. One of the largest press outlets picked the story up, and now there's a conversation about this problem, that's what I want to go do This is probably the scariest thing I've ever done in my life, but I'm also really excited about it If you're a company doing cool, impactful stuff with satellite images, geospatial & data and can't get the world to pay attention, let's work together. I have some cool stories coming up and some collaborations in the pipes. So, if that sounds cool, I'll see you around on the internets
