This is what stablecoin adoption at real stores can look like. At TOKEN2049’s Midnight event, WEA Japan CEO Yoshi Bansho laid out the work behind bringing stablecoin payments to everyday retail: connect wallets and chains to existing merchants, POS systems and PSPs, while allowing merchants to receive yen. The presentation showed Netstars’ scale... 15,000 connected merchants and 700,000 payment terminals... and two completed pilots: Haneda Airport in January and Lawson in August. Commercial rollout is planned for this autumn. The economics are tangible. The deck compared roughly 3% credit-card costs with WEA’s 0.98% model... about two percentage points in potential savings. Bansho’s example showed how some of that could become a shopper discount while the merchant keeps part of the savings. Privacy was central to the presentation: give regulators the information they require while protecting retailers’ settlement data. WEA’s slide specifically explained why it is looking to work with Midnight. WEA has also described NetX technology as powering its stablecoin payment work. Charles Hoskinson asked about Japan’s regulatory position. Bansho explained that the regulatory work was already done. Charles called the effort close to his heart, showed real interest, and made sure his chief of staff was there as they looked to explore it further. Dr. Ruan Anbang was also present. 🚨 This is exactly why the Global Cross-Border Digital Payment Ecosystem Alliance deserves more attention. @OSL_HK just announced another real institutional stablecoin deployment, providing tokenization, custody and distribution infrastructure around USDGO. And NetX has already publicly stated that it supported the launch of this Alliance by providing underlying infrastructure for its Japanese partners. That changes the way I look at this. Because OSL is not just some outside company building stablecoin products. It is sitting inside the SAME cross-border payment initiative as NETSTARS, Onafriq, Huifu, Pagsmile and Finloop. Because NetX and WEA have already been building around: Stablecoin settlement. Merchant POS infrastructure. Cross-chain payment routing. Web2/Web3 connectivity. Enterprise payment SaaS. And now one of the companies sitting inside the SAME Alliance is actively building out regulated institutional stablecoin infrastructure and cross-border settlement capabilities. That does NOT mean OSL is currently running transactions through NetX. That has not been announced. But it absolutely means these companies are no longer random names operating in different corners of the industry. They are intentionally sitting inside the same initiative trying to solve the same problem: How do you move stablecoin value across borders, route it compliantly, convert it locally and settle it to normal merchants? That is the bigger picture. Because if these Alliance members begin connecting their regional rails to each other… then this stops being about one stablecoin pilot or one merchant integration. You start talking about the possibility of a real cross-border settlement network. And if NetX becomes part of the infrastructure underneath the Japanese side of that network? That is a completely different level of adoption. No hype. No assumptions.
