The claim that XRP is merely a gas token or that it won't be locked in this system stems from a complete lack of understanding of XRPL's technical architecture and the XLS-65 / XLS-66 protocol standards.
In the lending ecosystem on XRPL, pools operate on an asset basis. There are not only RLUSD pools, but also XRP Single Asset Vaults. Institutions, exchange investors, and liquidity providers who want to generate passive income on their XRP deposit their XRP into these vaults. As long as XRP remains in the vault, it is pulled from circulating supply and locked up.
Under the XLS-66 lending protocol, loan brokers are required to put up First-Loss Capital as a collateral/capital buffer to create a risk shield. This capital and collateral can be held as XRP in pools. You cannot run a trillion-dollar market on a shallow market.
Companies like Arf use AMM and ODL (Ripple payments) channels on XRPL to convert the RLUSD they borrow into various local fiat currencies. For this conversion to take place, significant amounts of XRP must remain locked continuously in liquidity pools such as XRP/RLUSD, XRP/EUR, XRP/JPY and XRP/TRY
Those making gas token comments confuse XRPL with Ethereum. On Ethereum, ETH serves as both gas and collateral. On XRPL, XRP is not designed just to pay a 0.00001 XRP transaction fee; it is built as a bridge asset, pool collateral, and a store of value "from XRP Ledger"

It is completely natural for companies to borrow in RLUSD to avoid volatility risk on their balance sheets (loans are taken in RLUSD because they will be settled in dollars). However, the liquidity depth, risk pools, and bridge transfers behind this debt operate thanks to the locked liquidity in XRP vaults.

The XRP Ledger is a multi asset ledger since 2012.
XRP has a special role in auto-bridging: bridging liquidity on the DEX for the long tail of assets, aside from reserves/accounts/fees.
More importantly it's the only native asset on the network without a counterparty, neutral, can't be frozen, anyone can accept it.
It's money! XRP - is - money.
A network that is used for settlement, tokenization, credit and trading is a valuable network! It triggers more often auto-bridging on the DEX to leverage XRP's neutral status. Making it be money for more people.
A valuable network is good to house money.
It's a matter of order of operations. Let the price of the native asset be a knock on effect of large scale usage and acceptance of the XRP Ledger.
