A degree or certification can help build cybersecurity knowledge, but employers also need evidence that you know how to apply it.
During his conversation with Hacker Proof HQ, Michael Farnum, our Co-Founder and CEO of #CYBRSECCommunity, discusses a challenge he regularly sees among aspiring cybersecurity professionals: candidates who understand analyst work in theory but have little practical experience.
His advice is to pursue project-based experience wherever possible. Join a technical user group, build a lab, practice networking fundamentals, contribute to a project, and learn how technology works within its broader context.
Cybersecurity may not always be an entry-level career, but every hands-on project can help you build the experience needed to move closer to it.

Yesterday, #CYBRSECCommunity Co-Founder and CEO Michael Farnum joined cybersecurity leaders at the CyberSecure K-12 2026 Cybersecurity Conference for “The Security Ecosystem,” a vendor-agnostic panel focused on strengthening cybersecurity in K-12 education.
Moderated by Toni McPherson, the conversation brought Michael together with Rich McCrohan, Keith Turpin, and Jerrel Conerly to discuss how schools can effectively integrate security tools, strengthen their security architecture, and maximize their investments across areas such as Zero Trust, segmentation, vulnerability management, EDR, SIEM, NDR, and MFA.
The conference also featured insights from Bryan Perkola, Paul Williams, and Justin “Hutch” Hutchens, with sessions exploring security culture, incident response, disaster recovery, threat exposure management, and the shared responsibility of protecting students, educators, systems, and data.
It was wonderful to see so many familiar members of the cybersecurity community contributing their experience to this important conversation.
Special thanks to Charles Franklin and Oscar Gonzalez for inviting Michael to participate and for bringing cybersecurity leaders together to support the K-12 community.

The most valuable conversations do more than reinforce what we already believe. They challenge us to reconsider how we approach the work ahead.
In this #CYBRSignal clip, #CYBRSECCommunity CEO Michael Farnum reflects on an AI governance panel that changed his perspective on the relationship between cybersecurity, risk, and innovation.
As organizations accelerate AI adoption, security teams have an opportunity to move beyond the outdated role of the “department of no” and become trusted partners in responsible innovation.

What does it mean to have a hacker mentality?
In this clip from #CYBRSECCAST, Peyton Kennedy, Senior Security Researcher at Endor Labs, explains how curiosity, continuous learning, hands-on practice, and the ability to communicate technical risk helped shape his path into cybersecurity.
Peyton joins #CYBRSECCommunity Co-Founders Michael Farnum and Sam Van Ryder for a broader conversation about his cybersecurity journey, the hidden risks of AI adoption, prompt injection vulnerabilities, and how attackers can exploit trusted AI workflows.
That drive to keep learning, experimenting, and sharing knowledge is also at the heart of #CYBRHAKCON, where the hacker community will come together to break, build, learn, and share.
This episode of #CYBRSECCAST is sponsored by Endor Labs.

What keeps someone building a cybersecurity conference after 16 years, even through the moments when walking away would be easier?
For our Co-Founder and CEO of #CYBRSECCommunity, Michael Farnum, the answer is the community.
Once the conference begins and the inevitable challenges have been resolved, Michael starts hearing from attendees who gained new knowledge, made meaningful connections, found jobs, and advanced their careers because they participated.
Those stories provide the motivation to keep building experiences that create real opportunities for the cybersecurity community.

Organizations are creating AI security roles, but are they giving security leaders the authority needed to manage the risk?
New research examined by #CYBRSECMedia found that 65% of organizations with more than $10 billion in annual revenue have assigned a head of AI security. However, only 7% place primary accountability for enterprise AI governance with the CISO.
The disconnect raises important questions for cybersecurity and business leaders: Who owns AI governance? When should organizations establish dedicated AI security leadership? And how can security teams influence decisions before AI systems are selected, implemented, and scaled?
These are exactly the kinds of cross-functional leadership conversations that matter across #CYBRSECCON and #EXECSECCON. Effective AI governance requires clearly defined accountability, meaningful collaboration, and a security voice present before critical decisions are made.

Cybersecurity work is not disappearing, but the employment landscape is changing.
New research examined by #CYBRSECMedia found that cybersecurity job postings fell 26.4% during the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. Nine of 10 cybersecurity fields experienced declines, while only 9.5% of postings were classified as entry-level.
The findings raise important questions for professionals, students, employers, and industry leaders: How do we create credible pathways for newcomers, help current practitioners continue developing their skills, and prepare the workforce for a market increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence?
This is also why opportunities for hands-on learning, knowledge sharing, mentorship, and meaningful professional connections remain so important across the cybersecurity community.

What happens when artificial intelligence becomes an active participant in the security tabletop?
In Episode 10 of #CYBRMinded, Dr. Dustin Sachs sits down with Craig Wood, Founder and Principal of PSY Logistics Technology Partners, to examine how time pressure, competing priorities, and organizational culture shape real-world security decisions.
Their conversation highlights an important reason cybersecurity professionals need opportunities to learn together: effective security requires more than policies and tools. It requires trust, communication, cross-functional collaboration, and an environment where the secure choice is also a practical one.
