“Smallville” stars Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum reflect on the show’s 25th anniversary and its iconic series finale:
Welling reveals that the finale’s closing shot (where Clark rips open his shirt to reveal the Superman emblem) was never rehearsed: “We didn’t want anyone to see it if it wasn’t right. We got to set that day, and they had given me just a T-shirt, with no sleeves to wear underneath the shirt. Because they didn’t have the money to put the suit on, and they weren’t going to see it anyway.”
Rosenbaum (who left after Season 7 over pay disputes) returned for the finale with just one day to film: “I was in the makeup trailer with Natalie, our makeup artist, who was like a mother to me. I go, ‘All right, well, that’s it!’ And I gave her a hug, and I just go, ‘Oh man. Oh, shoot. Here I go!’ I just started crying, and she cried, and we hugged it out, and that was it. It was bittersweet.”
