Patrick Stewart had a magic for bringing warmth and empathy to everything he played. He could take cold, aloof characters like Xavier & make you FEEL his words: “It's the greatest gift we have to bear their pain without breaking. And it comes from the most human part of us: hope”

At FYC for The Mosquito Bowl. I am taken back to my own grandfather who was Army (not Marines) and was on Okinawa. And Saipan. And Pearl Harbor. He never really spoke of it but Peter Berg’s movie brings urgency to remembering what’s still living memory in an age eager to forget

Tony Gilroy’s BEHEMOTH is a deliberately sophisticated (which some will read as challenging) throwback to character studies for adults. And it’s confident it can get away with that due to the beauty of its music, the richness of its dialogue & Pedro Pascal at his absolute best 1/

The confidence is well earned, particularly Pascal at his most subtle. I also really like what Eva Victor is doing with her brief screen time. The music is the true showcase, mixing Bernstein-esque old Hollywood bombast with shades even of Gen Alpha innovation. 2/

As a whole though it’s a slow boil that I fear at times gets lost in its artfulness. There’s a point to its methodical and elliptical nature about the nature of life, or at least a creative one, and the ending devastates, but it takes a near symphony of words and scenes to arrive

Robert Eggers opens up about his new hair-raising nightmare, this Christmas’ Werwulf. In an exclusive deep-dive profile for Den of Geek’s new digital cover story, the filmmaker discusses his darkest movie to date, including how he and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke pioneered new ways to create a nigh black-and-white, orthochromatic aesthetic and the lengths he and co-writer Sjón went to authentically write the film’s dialogue in Middle English. Eggers also looks back on his career of moonlight and shadow, revealing the root origins of the ghosts he chases, from a family love of Shakespeare to the beginning of a beautiful friendship with Willem Dafoe. All that and more awaits in our Werwulf cover story.

Colman Domingo says at Michael FYC screening that while unpacking the mythology and lore around Joe Jackson that he needed to remember he was a pre-Civil Rights individual with a very specific concept of what being a man, and “a provider” who modeled “rigor,” meant. Fascinating

And… retweeted and co-signed.
Obsessed with the idea of an Elizabeth Holmes musical that wins Amanda Seyfried the Tony

I see folks are arguing Nathan Fielder’s intentions in You Can See Everything. By design I think he is pulling at several threads at once, and I tried unraveling all of them in this deep dive that goes way beyond the “twist” ending: denofgeek.com/movies/you-can…

Can’t say I’m shocked someone else stepped in to a production midway through filming. I just hope Reeves’ family is getting through this and the directorial change actually has his blessing.

Is Street Fighter good? Not particularly. Does the story make sense? Not in the slightest. Is the acting good? Depends who we’re talking about (Callina Liang is fab). But if you grew up with ‘90s anime, I’d be lying if I didn’t say there are moments where you’re grinning. MWV

Just saw Jane Schoenbrun’s Camp Miasma in a beautifully sketchy VHS, pan and scan transfer at a bar in Bushwick (Negative Spade Cinema) and… this might be the ideal way to experience Jane’s hallucinatory reverie to slasher flesh and fluids?

why don't we just keep making original movies all together.....the simple answer is..... BECAUSE YOU DONT WANT ME TO. DEEP DOWN INSIDE YOU WANT ME POUNDING OUT SEQUEL. AND YOU WANT ME TO KEEP PRODUCING REMAKES!!

Absolutely wild a filmmaker who claims to love horror, and indeed has worked in it, refers to it as "lowbrow genre" fare and little more than "schlock teenagers used to rent on DVD." Is he sure film festivals are the ones pandering to snobs and elitist, pseudo-intellectuals?

As a lifelong musical theater lover, I’m on cloud Brigadoon after seeing The Debut at the SAG screening. Julianne Moore is incandescent at channeling the entire actor’s creative journey thru a tertiary community theater bit part. It’s so innocently baby stepping to diva status 1/

And the deafening applause for her 4-letter monologue in this guild room? A second Oscar looking real likely… 👀

In my head I’d like to think this is some eighth dimensional chess on Spielberg’s part to keep TCM unharmed. If so, sure bring on 20 more Optimus Prime movies!

Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland is a deeply pensive work. The film attempts to intellectualize (and acknowledge the inherent limitations therein) the shared cultural legacy of atrocities & shame, and the eternal negotiation between those ghosts and a society’s greater histories 1/

There can of course be no reconciliation, but that tension between them builds a haunting atmosphere that I cannot help but recognize our current reality in. How we grapple with it (or not), be it like West or East Germany, leaves us without that elusive sense of home. #NYFF
