We just arrested a Chinese foreign agent at LAX attempting to depart for China.
Wanying Zhang, aka “Heather,” 34, of Irvine, was arrested today by @FBILosAngeles on a federal complaint charging her with acting as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China.
According to the affidavit, Zhang traveled to Seattle in 2025 and, at the direction of PRC officials, surveilled a close relative of a Taiwanese government official, sending photos, videos, and license plate information to those officials.
She coordinated the trip with an associate and used tradecraft to avoid detection. She never notified the Attorney General she was acting for a foreign government, a federal offense.
She will appear in federal court in Los Angeles tomorrow for her initial appearance. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Communist China is our ENEMY.
This is only further PROOF of what we already know — they’re actively infiltrating our country and threatening our national security.
Glad to see the @FBI holding this CCP spy accountable!

The FBI has confirmed that the CCP used proxies in the United States to surveil and follow members of Taiwan’s president’s family.
This is what #TransNationalRepression looks like, and why democracies must stand together against intimidation that crosses borders.
Foreign adversaries take note: America is no longer a safe place to run your espionage operations.
Allegedly surveil a foreign leader’s family on U.S. soil for the PRC — and try to catch a flight back to Shanghai?
Not happening.
This FBI is hunting threats to our national security wherever they hide — and bringing them to justice.

There are many unregistered agents of PRC in USA.
CA and NY are the top 2 states to harbor them.
Time to clean the house and protect our homeland.
Boy, CCP will hate to see me get elected to Congress, after years of threatening me & trying to silence me.
[ Margin Notes ] A California realtor just tried to board a flight home to Shanghai with a suitcase full of secrets she was never supposed to have. FBI agents stopped Wanying “Heather” Zhang, 34, at LAX on Sunday and charged her with acting as an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China. According to the federal complaint, the Irvine woman traveled to Seattle last year, photographed the suburban home of the Taiwanese president’s son, recorded license plates, and sent the material back to handlers in Beijing via WeChat. She coordinated the trip with an associate and used basic tradecraft to avoid notice. She never told the Attorney General she was working for a foreign government.
This is not an isolated arrest. It is a familiar operating pattern. Beijing recruits or pressures people already inside the target society—naturalized citizens, alumni of universities with close ties to the Ministry of State Security, professionals whose jobs give them legitimate reasons to move around and ask questions. Real estate agents, in particular, can visit neighborhoods, note routines, and blend in without raising alarms. The tasks are often modest: watch a relative of a political figure, pass along photos, report what you see. Over time those small reports feed a larger effort to map, intimidate, and influence overseas communities that Beijing views as threats, especially Taiwanese ones.
Zhang’s case shows how the system works in practice. An introduction from a former classmate, instructions over an encrypted app, a short trip, and a quiet return. No dramatic spy gadgets required. The goal is persistent, low-visibility coverage of people and places the Chinese government wants watched, conducted by individuals who already hold U.S. passports and ordinary jobs. When one of them is caught heading for the exit, the pattern becomes visible for a moment. Then the next recruiter starts looking for the next useful contact.

The FBI’s arrest of an alleged PRC agent accused of surveilling President Lai’s son is deeply concerning.
Beijing’s transnational repression must be taken seriously. Democracies must stand together against CCP intimidation.

Dictatorship V Democracy. That’s the choice facing a dangerously weakened free world.
Not surprising to see the two isolated and dangerous regimes of North Korea and Afghanistan now proudly shaking hands and publicly demonstrating their collaboration in support of Putin’s illegal war against Ukraine. Both regimes have some of the worst records of human rights violations against their own people.

Wanying “Heather” Zhang (张婉莹), a naturalized US citizen and a graduate of 🇨🇳 University of International Relations (2014), which has close ties to 🇨🇳 Ministry of State Security…
She got a Master of Public Administration degree from 🇺🇸 USC in 2016.
A sleeper agent planted into the US?
💥 The FBI arrested suspected Chinese agent Wanying "Heather" Zhang, a naturalized US citizen, at Los Angeles International Airport on Oct 4 after she surveilled the Taiwanese president's US-based son.
Zhang, an Irvine, California, realtor, was cuffed by federal law enforcement before she boarded a flight to Shanghai, China, from LAX, on a charge of acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.
Zhang’s husband Edric Ding is also a realtor at the same firm.
A criminal complaint, filed in federal court by a member of the FBI's counterintelligence squad in Los Angeles, accused Zhang and an accomplice of traveling to Seattle, Washington, in Sep 2025 and taking pictures at the suburban home of a top Taiwanese official's family.
The target was Ting-Yu Lai, the son of Taiwanese President Ching-Te Lai.
Ting-Yu, an engineer in his 30s, attended college in America and has a young US-born son with his wife, Hsiao Chen. He now works for the Dutch multinational electronics firm Philips.
“If the PRC [People's Republic of China] wish to obtain leverage over the President of Taiwan during any potential conflict, the location and pictures of the close relatives of a high-ranking Taiwanese government official, including pictures of their homes and cars, could be useful to the PRC.”
Zhang and a man named only as "Individual 1" flew from Las Vegas to Seattle on Sep 1, 2025, rented a black Nissan Rogue and drove to their target's home.
Images from a neighbor's security camera show the two "appearing to film" Ting-Yu, his wife and their child as they arrived home that evening.
Zhang texted her Chinese government handler: "Saw him. Young male. It's that young one," and "I am videorecording," followed by two license plate numbers.
The texts from WeChat were obtained from a search warrant on Zhang's iCloud account.
“Zhang was in contact with at least two people whom she appeared to acknowledge worked for the PRC government.”
Zhang was introduced in June 2025 to one of the Chinese government officials by a classmate from her alma mater, Beijing's University of International Relations, which has close ties to 🇨🇳 Ministry of State Security.
Zhang booked a private room in Changsha, China, during a June 2025 trip, where she allegedly met the government official and received her surveillance mission.
She later texted the official, “I can take care of this thing”.
On Aug 26, 2025, Zhang wrote: “I will be busy with work in L.A. this week. I will probably go to Seattle next week” and the official replied: “Ok. Thank you for your hard work.”
Zhang is a licensed California realtor with JC Pacific Capital Inc. Her Zillow profile says she has 130 sales and listings around Los Angeles and neighboring counties.
Ting-Yu received his bachelor's in electrical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2012; a master's in Bioengineering Innovation and Design from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the following year; then a PhD from the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington.

Taiwan policy is a total time-warp. It’s not the 1970s any more. “One China” policies were for a time when Taipei claimed the right to rule the whole of China, and it was necessary to decide who could legitimately make that claim. Most countries chose Beijing. That’s what “One China” means. But Taiwan completely abandoned this claim a long time ago, and even made constitutional amendments to underline it. Why, then, do we persist with these policies as if the political reality is unchanged? “One China” policies are obsolete, and the ambiguity they create is a moving target for Beijing’s grey zone activity. We should junk them and develop something fit for purpose. We cannot hope to deter Beijing’s ambitions unless we are clearer on what Taiwan is, and what our consequent red-lines should be. @FreddyLim

Imagine if you had to register with the government just to raise money for charity.
That's the way things are heading in Hong Kong...
But five pro-democracy activists, including Cardinal Joseph Zen and singer Denise Ho, are still fighting for what's left of Hong Kong's freedoms. 💪
The group was convicted for failing to register a pro-democracy protest-relief fund as a society under the city’s Societies Ordinance.
They'll now argue in Hong Kong's top court, the Court of Final Appeal, that the ruling makes freedom of association near impossible because it implies that any group undertaking any kind of activity will have to register as a society or risk similar prosecution.
What do we think?
Good luck to them! If nothing else, taking the challenge to the top court will mean more evidence that Hong Kong's courts serve Beijing rather than justice.
