How can #African institutions turn critical development challenges into fundable, sustainable solutions?
In a changing global funding environment, securing resources requires more than identifying a need. It requires credible evidence, strong partnerships, measurable outcomes and proposals that demonstrate lasting impact.
At the #GrandStrategyFellowship Forum 2026, Prof. Violet Naanyu, Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences and Member of the WHO Technical Advisory Board, will contribute her expertise to the Global Funding & International Careers (GFIC) track.
The discussion will explore how #African institutions can strengthen their ability to compete for funding by connecting research, evidence, innovation and development priorities with the expectations of international funders and strategic partners.
From #health and #education to #technology and #economic development, the conversation will examine how institutions can diversify funding sources, build strategic collaborations and design programmes that move beyond short-term grants toward sustainable investment and measurable development impact.

📄A new joint perspective paper from GARDP, @DNDi, @MedsforMalaria and @MedicinesDev sets out 7 recommendations to strengthen the WHO functions that support public health innovation, particularly where commercial incentives for R&D are limited.
The recommendations include protecting specialist expertise, establishing clearer timelines for key processes, securing predictable funding and improving coordination across WHO headquarters, regional and country offices.
For antibiotic development, connecting priority-setting, target product profiles and scientific advice with treatment recommendations and country introduction is critical to ensuring that R&D translates into access.
