DRPS Welcomes New Police Service Dog True The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is expanding its Canine Unit with the addition of Police Service Dog (PSD) True, a specially trained German Shorthaired Pointer who will support searches for missing and vulnerable people and human remains. True joins DRPS as part of the Service’s new Search and Rescue/Human Remains Detection (SAR/HRD) K9 Program, providing officers with an additional specialized resource for incidents where locating an individual quickly can be critical to their safety and well-being. Born in Germany on June 29, 2025, True was specifically selected and trained for search and rescue work. His current capabilities include human scent tracking, evidence detection, open-area searching and human remains detection. True can follow an individual’s scent across a variety of environments and surfaces to help locate them or determine their direction of travel. He is also trained to locate articles or evidence carrying human scent and can systematically search large outdoor areas using both handler-directed and independent search techniques. True will primarily be deployed in searches for missing children, vulnerable and elderly individuals, non-violent persons experiencing a mental health crisis, and people who may be injured, lost or disoriented and unable to return to safety independently. When True locates a person, he is trained to remain with them and alert his handler by sitting and barking until the handler arrives. This passive response provides an important search option in circumstances where apprehension is neither necessary nor appropriate, while minimizing the potential for injury to the person being located. His training in human remains detection will also provide DRPS with another specialized resource to support searches and investigations. The addition of True represents an important investment in public safety and the continued evolution of the DRPS Canine Unit’s search capabilities. And while True has a serious job to do, he still knows how to enjoy his downtime. His favourite activity is hiking, and his favourite toy is, without question, a ball. Welcome to DRPS, True!

The Durham Regional Police Service was proud to partner with the Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police Service, and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation for a successful Project BASS Car Seat Clinic in Oshawa. Throughout the afternoon, officers and certified technicians met with parents and caregivers to provide hands-on education and guidance on the proper installation and use of child car seats. Events like this help ensure children are travelling safely and give families the confidence that their seats are installed correctly. A big thank you to everyone who attended and to our partners for their continued commitment to road safety and protecting our youngest passengers. 🚗👶 @OPP @TorontoPolice @ONtransport Together, we are helping keep Durham Region families safe on our roads.

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is alerting parents, caregivers, and community members to an increase in online threats involving coordinated groups known as “The Com” (short for the Community). “The Com” is a network of online predators who use grooming, manipulation, coercion, and intimidation to exploit young people, which can lead to violent and/or criminal behaviour. Offenders often build trust, create secrecy through fear or shame, and pressure victims into harmful or unsafe activities. These groups target children and youth aged 8 to 17 across popular online platforms, including Discord, Telegram, Snapchat, Roblox, Minecraft, Twitch, and Steam. These online predators operate using the following tactics: - Building trust through friendship or romantic attention - Manipulating youth using fear, guilt, or intimidation - Coercing victims into harmful or unsafe activities, including: o Creating or sharing inappropriate and exploitative images or videos o Engaging in self-harm or harm toward others or animals o Displaying concerning usernames, symbols, or messages o Coercing children to participate in crimes—such as hoax 9‑1‑1 calls (swatting), online attacks, or sharing harmful content—often without realizing the seriousness of what they’re being manipulated into. - Forcing compliance through threats such as exposing private information, doxing, or swatting. DRPS has recently responded to a number of incidents in the community that are believed to be linked to this online predatory group. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to watch for patterns or clusters of the following behaviours: - Use of encrypted apps (e.g., Discord, Telegram) without parental knowledge - Withdrawal, secrecy, mood changes, or declining academic performance - Increased or secretive use of phones or electronic devices Interest in extreme or harmful online ideologies - New online contacts your child seems unusually attached to—or afraid of While one of these signs may not be of concern, multiple indicators together may warrant attention. You can help protect your child by talking to them about the risks of sharing personal information or images online. Ask direct, non-judgmental questions about the platforms they use and the individuals they interact with. Ensure you have access to your child’s online platforms and regularly review their activity. Pay close attention to platforms with chat or group features. If you notice any concerning online activity or individuals on online platforms that may pose a safety risk, report it to DRPS at 1-888-579-1520.
