Powerful waves battered Taiwan's eastern coastline Friday as Typhoon Champi approached the island, bringing dangerous conditions to coastal areas. Taiwan's Interior Ministry warned residents to stay away from coastlines and ports, citing dangerous waves and strong winds intensified by the approaching typhoon and northeast monsoon.

In the West Pacific, Typhoon Champi is near the coast of Taiwan. In spite of forecasts of recurving towards Kyushu, the typhoon has jogged west in the past hours. At this rate, one can not rule out a landfall in Taiwan.

Still striking differences between AI and physics based tracking models for #TyphoonChampi. Shown here ECMWF IFS (left) and AIFS (right). Google Deep Mind based runs also showing turn. Pretty much all the physics based models track it straight into Taiwan.

Typhoon #Champi, Cat 4 on the SSHWS, is taking aim at Guam this morning. From there may head toward Taiwan over next several days. reaching there in 6 days or so. Shown here radar loop, satellite view and latest forecast track as of this morning.
