I hope this episode with Ed Sheeran and Macklemore demonstrates to the masses how powerful we are collectively, how much power each of us holds individually to withdraw our consent and complicity, and refuse silence. Thank you to every musician who dropped out, and to every ticket holder demanding a refund and refusing to attend.
Fat Joe can say the N-word and have people rush to defend him, explain the context, and tell everybody not to take it the wrong way.
But Macklemore says βFree Palestineβ and gets removed from the Ed Sheeran tour.
You donβt have to agree with Macklemore. You donβt have to agree with Fat Joe. But if weβre going to talk about freedom of expression, the standard should be consistent.
Why is one personβs controversial speech something weβre supposed to understand, while another personβs political speech costs him his job?
