On New Year's Eve 1942, a British destroyer captain with his face torn open and one eye blinded by shrapnel refused to leave his bridge, bluffed a German battleship into turning tail, and saved a convoy. It so enraged Hitler that he nearly scrapped his entire surface navy. This is the Victoria Cross of Captain Robert Sherbrooke. Here was the mismatch. In the black cold of the Arctic winter, off northern Norway, Sherbrooke was guarding a convoy of fourteen merchant ships hauling tanks, aircraft, and fuel to keep the Soviet Union in the war. His escort was a thin screen of destroyers, fine against submarines, hopelessly outmatched against heavy warships. And on the morning of December 31, out of the frozen murk came exactly that, a German battle group built around the heavy cruiser Hipper and the pocket battleship Lützow, ships that badly outgunned everything he had. By any rational math the Germans should have swept the destroyers aside and butchered the merchant ships. Sherbrooke refused to allow it. He fought one of the great bluffing actions in naval history, hurling his little destroyers straight at the German giants, faking torpedo runs, throwing up smoke, darting in and out. The German commander, terrified of losing a precious capital ship to a lucky torpedo, flinched away every time. Four times the enemy tried to reach the convoy. Four times the destroyers turned them back. Then Sherbrooke paid for it. A shell hit his ship and shrapnel ripped into his face, destroying the sight of one eye and leaving him bleeding and half blinded on his own bridge. He should have gone below. He would not. Grievously wounded, he kept directing the entire defense, and even after he let another officer take tactical command, he refused to be carried off. He insisted on receiving every report of the battle, hanging on through the pain, until he was certain the convoy was safe. Only then did he allow himself to be treated. The convoy came through almost untouched. And the shockwave went all the way to Berlin. When Hitler learned that a mighty German battle group had been chased off by a handful of destroyers, he flew into a rage and nearly ordered the great surface ships broken up for scrap. The head of the German navy resigned over it. One half blinded captain's refusal to yield on New Year's Eve helped sideline Germany's surface fleet for the rest of the war. Sherbrooke survived, kept his eye patch and his career, rose to admiral, and lived on for decades.
