If we live in a simulation does that make our lives less valuable? Are we less real? Is reality fake?

What if the ‘Black Eyed Children’ aren't sinister demons, but computer malware? Philosopher Alexey Turchin's new paper suggests that not only do we live in a computer simulation but urban legends could be viruses loose in our Matrix, feeding on human fears to survive and replicate. Every time you share the story, you help it spread…

What if the greatest threat to humanity isn't AI, nuclear war or a killer virus... but someone in the next universe up hitting the power button?... Philosopher Bradford Saad of Utrecht University spent three years writing a report called 'Simulations and Catastrophic Risks' - and his conclusions are pretty terrifying... He argues that the shutdown of our simulated reality is a 'neglected catastrophic risk' - one that almost nobody is working on. If we live in a Matrix, our simulators could switch us off at any moment - and it's not obvious that there's anything we can do about it... But Saad also says triggering shutdown could also be an 'escape hatch', so if our simulated reality ever descends into an absolute nightmare, we could deliberately provoke our simulators to switch us off - which might be the least-worst option left. Although pulling that plug too soon would itself be a 'catastrophic moral error'... And his numbers should make you worry - he estimates a greater than 90% chance that thousands of large-scale social simulations will be run within the next century, and a 60% chance that simulations containing CONSCIOUS minds will become a real thing... So - if we are about to fill simulated worlds with conscious beings, hasn't someone in the universe above almost certainly already done that... to us? And the real question then becomes - how do we stay interesting enough to be kept running?....

Physicist Mag Tegmark says that our reality can not only be described by mathematics, but it IS mathematics. If so then reality has to be computational, and therefore we must be living inside a grand computer simulation running in the next universe up….

We live in a simulation, but in order for it to be cost effective, reality will be switched off as soon as it’s served its purpose - which is suggested in philosopher Lorenzo Pieri’s recent paper. This terrifying possibility raises a question - how long do we have left?…..

We live in a simulation that needs to be computationally efficient - that could mean that the people floating around in our background are simply generated as required - you and I can be in the same place at the same time and encounter different forgettable ‘background people’..

I guess the simulation would increase the resolution of your experience . Ultimately if you become significantly involved with this person the sim might have to go back to the original timeline and replace them with someone conscious like us…..

Fantastic short film about plugging into simulated realities like the Matrix from @Gossip_Goblin - their short film pomegranate is a masterpiece - I recommend it - you can watch it on YouTube

Does gaming technology prove we live in a simulation? Does quantum phenomenon look suspiciously like a gaming technology technique called ‘dead reckoning’? Players in this Matrix all have slightly different versions of reality - as if the ‘dead reckoning’ algorithm was active….

Are we living in a simulation to be studied by our simulators? Could our behaviour be the focus of their examinations? Could the simulators be steering our experiences depending on that behaviour? And does this apparent manipulation give rise to the traditional idea of a ‘God’?…

If you took your last breath and then popped out of this simulated reality Matrix back to the ‘real’ world - knowing that your life in the simulation wasn’t real, and the people you knew and loved weren’t real, would you grieve for the person you had been?….

If we’re not in a simulation, does that mean we are zombies ? Does the fact that we are artificial humans in an artificial reality give rise to our consciousness? Professor Walter Barta explored this possibility in one of his academic papers…

Vopson’s second law of infodynamics proves that our reality is computational - and likely a giant Matrix - but the questions are ‘who built it?’, ‘why am I in it?’, and ‘how do I escape’?…
Professor Melvin Vopson explains that reality emerges from mathematical rules embedded in computer code - which strongly suggests that we live in a simulation

Could urban myths and religious principles that are common across all cultures help us put together a 'map of meaning' that helps us navigate this simulated reality?... if our simulators have a purpose for this Matrix, then thousands of years of human experience might give us clues to what that purpose might be...

If we live in a simulation then consider this: @davidchalmers42 called them p-zombies , @Rizstanford called them NPCs - I’m talking about humans that act exactly like us but don’t have conscious experiences. What if consciousness is only present in simulated humans? Philosopher Walter Barta explored this idea in his paper ‘Zombies in the Basement? Ghosts in the Floorboards?’ , he suggests that consciousness might be a simulation-only phenomena, and it might be generated at the interface between base reality and the simulation.

If our simulated reality is a faithful reproduction of an original archive, then there must have been people in the original 2026 who were convinced they were in a simulation - but they weren't. Which means in our simulated reality there are simulated humans who are copies of people who were convinced they were living in a simulation when they werent, but the copies believe that too, and they are...... the mind boggles..

Do we live in a simulation? and could that Matrix have been created for 'coddled' future humans to experience a more 'visceral' reality, before dying in the sim and returning to a pampered unsatisfying reality?
