Scotland was promised renewal. It got something else entirely. My new book Scotland Undone is out now — a forensic account of SNP fiscal recklessness, institutional capture, and performative politics that failed schools, hospitals, and the people who needed them most. 👇 amazon.co.uk/dp/1036960315 #ScotlandUndone #Scotland #SNP

By the way, *this* is patriotism. Generating business, earning money and generating revenues thereby supporting others is a patriotic act. On the other hand, taxing people into oblivion is parasitic.
I asked my students doing business statistics majors here in China why they chose it. They explained they wanted to contribute to their society by generating jobs, wealth creation and get nice fat pay checks by the time they’re my age (37). Asian isn’t messing about. Scotland is.

Lord McConnell will - alongside a whole era of Scottish Labour politicians - be furious. Quite correctly too.

From conversations I’ve had, it’s sometimes because they struggle to believe they have skills usable elsewhere, (which they do). But the civil service doesn’t give people formal moveable qualifications, and it’s very good at making diligent people focus on what they can’t do.

Always been of the view that if Scotland generated wealth similar to the likes of Singapore or Hong Kong, that would make me re-consider my stance on independence. But our Scottish culture precludes any notion of that. Basically 'nae chance!'

This young man is passionate and articulate, but has been told at every turn that wealth cannot be earned. I want a Scotland where wealth is no longer a dirty word - because passion for enterprise and industry pays.

Interesting that as Polanski, Berry and others now say they don’t agree with the “Zionism is racism” motion passed by their conference, Scottish Greens co-leader Ross Greer absolutely does believe that statement. He took journalists’ questions after FMQs yesterday 🧵 👇 1/3

I mean, he's objectively wrong. The Democrats did not lose over Gaza and Walz is an idiot for believing this. The Democrats lost over inflation and Trump is poised to lose over inflation. Politicians need to stop thinking internet social issues drive elections
Tim Walz says the Harris campaign chased the wrong voters — Dick Cheney Republicans: (Lever) “It’s pretty hard to deny that one of our base was fractured — the American Jewish community and the Muslim community, over Gaza and the intolerable assault. In retrospect, we should have spent time there — not courting a nebulous group of Wyoming Republicans who weren’t going to vote for us.” He is arguing the Cheney swing was a dead end — and the split over Gaza was the real problem. The rest of the postmortem is just as blunt. Harris never broke from Biden — the DNC autopsy said the White House never positioned her to run her own race. Walz’s early “they’re weird” line got benched for a big tent with Cheney, Bernie, and Taylor Swift. And the party’s own report skipped Gaza and Biden’s age — the two fights that actually split the ticket.Did they lose the base trying to rent Liz Cheney’s? nitter.cf/LeverNews/status/21080…

I have few problems expecting civil servants to turn up to the office at a minimum 40% of the time. Uproar? Upper level civil servants especially won’t leave, as their job perks are very comfy compared to the private sector.
🔴EXC: Stephen Kerr, the government's Social Security Director, has caused fury among civil servants for comments on an internal message board He told staff upset at new mandatory 40% office working days that if 'they don't like it they can leave' scotsman.com/news/politics/a…

Does Ross Greer understand the difference between Palestinians who remained inside Israel after 1948 and those who did not? Based on these interviews, I don’t believe that he does.

It’s only hard to answer if you’re antisemitic. Israel, the only Jewish state on earth, has the right to exist.
Why is this a difficult question to answer ?

Stephen, I note you ask your question again, so I guess my strongest reply is to answer it and return the tennis ball? Local government's capacity has been hollowed out by Holyrood and the SNP in particular which has seen it as an easy method of cost-savings to fund irresponsible 'free' pledges (see all my articles and, no doubt yours, on Scot Fiscal Com on this point since 2011). The Accounts Commission found councils absorbed a 4.2% real-terms cut since 2013/14 (excluding Covid money), a deeper cut than the rest of the Scottish Government budget. An ever larger share of what remained was ring-fenced to Edinburgh's priorities. Councils have had no multi-year settlements and no revenue autonomy, and they administer ministerial agendas with a local logo attached. That is not evidence against devolving power. It is evidence of what centralisation does to the tier beneath it. You cannot starve an institution and then cite its malnutrition as proof it should not be fed. Apply your test consistently. Holyrood has a unicameral chamber and a civil service that left no documentary trail on the Ferguson Marine guarantee. It went fifteen years without a single ministerial direction. Whitehall gave us HS2. Are calibre, scrutiny and accountability "meaningfully better" there? If not, your criteria count against your conclusion as much as against mine. The accountability deficit is structural. Holyrood spends money it does not raise. Councils answer for services they neither fund nor control. Restore the fiscal link, with genuine revenue powers and transparent settlements in place of ring-fencing, and voters can finally attach consequences to decisions. Responsibility builds calibre. Proximity to Whitehall does not. Nor is this "32 little Holyroods." Subsidiarity means decisions are taken at the most local level capable of effective delivery. Some functions go to regions, some to councils, and some stay national. Germany and Switzerland work this way, and neither concludes that weak municipalities justify a stronger capital. Badenoch has identified the right failure and prescribed the wrong cure. Recentralisation does not defeat nationalism. It hands the SNP the grievance it has lacked since 2014. Maybe read my book, I do address your content, albeit finding a different solution. amazon.sg/Scotland-Undone-Na…
All these things — especially authority, improved outcomes, ramifications for failure — were also promised of devolution. That system having delivered none of these, it’s now said to be local government where they can be achieved. Devolutionism is an unfalsifiable doctrine.
