Christians are not remnants of Syria's past. Three Syrian political organizations have published the first joint position paper on Christians' future: a non-sectarian state, equal rights, safe return, property restitution. No privileges. Full citizenship.

Christians are not guests in Syria. That was the message from church leaders and Assyrian/Syriac representatives at the European Parliament this week. Not quotas, not privileges, but equal citizenship. Christians were 10% of Syria before the war. Today about 2%.

It is a reminder that our communities endured unimaginable suffering, displacement, and destruction. Yet, with help from Christians around the world, we refused to disappear.
Chaldeans and other Iraqi Christians continue to rebuild our homes, churches, communities, and future in the land of our ancestors, defying the odds after ISIS tried to erase our presence on our indigenous lands. 🙏🏼✝️

We want Christians to be protected as Syrians their country. as equal citizens and full partners in building
For this reason, we see five priorities:

- Protection of people and places.
- Accountability for violations.
- Safe and dignified return.
- And genuine political participation."

🕯️ From Genocide to Rebuilding: Malfono Shukri Charmukli and the Revival of Assyrian Life in Qamishli and Across Syria
He rarely stood in the spotlight. Yet behind the scenes, he became one of those who helped rebuild Assyrian communal life after genocide, persecution, and displacement.
Malfono Shukri Charmukli (1909–1974) was an Assyrian patriot, educator, mentor, and community organizerwho played an important role in the educational, cultural, social, athletic, and national life of the Assyrians of Qamishli and beyond. 📚🏕️⚽🔥
His story began in Amid (Diyarbakır), where he was born in 1909 into the city's centuries-old community of Assyrian Christians.
Then came 1915 — the genocide against Assyrian and other Christian communities under Ottoman rule. 🕯️
For the Assyrians, this catastrophe became known as Sayfo — the Assyrian Genocide.
Across Amid, Mardin, Tur Abdin, Siirt, Cizre, and many other regions, Assyrians were killed, deported, and driven from their homes. Ancient communities were devastated, families were scattered, and countless people lost their loved ones, homes, property, and ancestral lands.
In the years that followed the genocide, persecution and displacement continued to reshape Assyrian life.
The Charmukli family eventually left Amid and migrated to Qamishli in the Syrian Jazira.
But they were far from alone.
Qamishli became a new home for Assyrian survivors and displaced families originating from more than a hundred villages, towns, and cities — from Amid, Mardin, and Tur Abdin to Siirt, Cizre, and many other regions. 🕯️
They arrived from different local communities, carrying with them their memories, traditions, dialects, and experiences of loss.
In Qamishli, survivors and their descendants began rebuilding what genocide and displacement had torn apart: homes, churches, schools, associations, scout groups, sports clubs, and cultural institutions. 🏠⛪📚🏕️⚽
Qamishli was not the story of one village or one city. It became a meeting place for survivors and displaced families from across a devastated homeland. 💙
One generation had lost almost everything.
The next generation had to rebuild. 🔥
And this is where we find Malfono Shukri Charmukli.
Shukri studied French language and literature and spent a period in Beirut, where he also worked at an orphanage connected to the community. In 1933, he settled in Qamishli.
There, the work that would define his legacy began.
Charmukli rarely sought the spotlight.
He built from behind the scenes.
📚 Education and schools
✍️ Teaching the Syriac language
🏕️ Scouting and youth development
⚽ Sports and community organizations
🎶 Cultural and social activities
🔥 Assyrian national consciousness
His Assyrian patriotism was expressed not merely through words, but through decades of service to his people — educating younger generations, strengthening cultural life, supporting the Syriac language, organizing youth, and nurturing Assyrian national consciousness.
In 1936, Charmukli was instrumental in establishing the Fourth Syriac Scout Group of Qamishli, which began with around forty young members.
Scouting was about much more than uniforms. It brought young Assyrians together through discipline, teamwork, music, leadership, and service to their community. 🏕️🥁
His name also became closely associated with Beth Nahrin / al-Rafidayn, an important sporting, social, and cultural association in Qamishli. Football, basketball, volleyball, music, and other activities created spaces where Assyrian youth could meet, organize, and grow together. ⚽🏀🎶
A remarkable photograph from 1938 shows Charmukli as a school director standing among the students of the ENO WAT School in Qamishli.
Perhaps no image better represents his legacy:
not above the younger generation, but among them. 👨🏫💙
Charmukli's work also stood within the intellectual tradition of Naum Faiq, the great Assyrian thinker, writer, journalist, and educator from Amid.
Faiq championed education, the Syriac language, national unity, and the awakening of Assyrian consciousness. Charmukli belonged to a later generation that helped transform such ideas into institutions and organized community life.
Naum Faiq wrote. ✍️
Shukri Charmukli built. 🏛️

Scouts.
Sports.
Culture.
Youth.
Community.
Consciousness.
Charmukli's role also extended beyond education and cultural life. In 1951, he was elected as a member of the Qamishli Chamber of Commerce and Industry, reflecting the respected position he had established within the wider civic life of the city.
His influence was also felt in Assyrian national life. He belonged to the intellectual environment in which a new generation of Assyrians was being formed.
In 1957, the Assyrian Democratic Organization — ADO/Mtakasto emerged in Qamishli. Charmukli is remembered as an important educator and intellectual mentor within the Assyrian national environment from which this new generation developed. 🌱
His story, therefore, is about much more than one educator.
It is part of the larger story of what happened after 1915.
After Sayfo, Assyrian Christians from Amid, Mardin, Tur Abdin, Siirt, Cizre, and many other regions had suffered enormous losses.
But destruction did not mean disappearance.
In Qamishli, Assyrians built again.

What was rebuilt in Qamishli did not remain confined to one city. The educators, organizations, cultural initiatives, and generations shaped there became part of the wider story of Assyrian life across Syria.
And among those who devoted their lives to that revival stood:
Malfono Shukri Charmukli.
On 13 February 1974, he died in Beirut. 🕯️
But his legacy continued through the young people, institutions, and community life he had helped nurture.
From Amid to Qamishli.
From genocide to survival.
From survival to rebuilding.
From rebuilding to revival. 💙
🕯️ Malfono Shukri Charmukli — 1909–1974
He did not seek the spotlight.
He helped his people rise again.
An Assyrian patriot.
An educator.
An organizer.
A mentor.
A quiet builder of generations. 💙🔥

Disappointing to see Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi convene a special committee on Sinjar without Yazidi representation—especially when Yazidi MPs like @murad_ismael bring deep expertise and firsthand knowledge.
The international community should urge the Iraqi PM to ensure that no decisions about Sinjar or the Yazidi community are made without Yazidis at the table.
