Hundreds of years ago, a highly learned scholar named Ganapati Bhatta lived in Karnataka. He was a devout follower of the Ganapatya sect and worshipped Lord Ganesha as the Supreme Brahman. He believed with all his heart that the ultimate form of God must have an elephant's head. Hearing that the Supreme Lord had appeared as Daru Brahman (the wooden deity) in Shri Kshetra (Puri), Ganapati Bhatta traveled hundreds of miles to seek darshan. He arrived on the auspicious day of Deva Snana Purnima, when the Deities are brought out to the Snana Mandap for their grand bathing ceremony. Full of devotion, he eagerly looked up at the altar but his heart broke. He saw Lord Jagannath with His large, round eyes and wide smile, but there was no elephant trunk. Deeply disappointed and concluding that this was not his Supreme Lord, Ganapati Bhatta refused to offer his prayers, turned his back on the temple, and began walking out of Puri. But Lord Jagannath, who resides in the hearts of all beings, could not bear to see His devotee leave empty-handed. The Lord disguised Himself as a humble Brahmin priest and intercepted the scholar on the dusty road. With a gentle voice, the disguised Lord said, "O great scholar, do not leave so hastily. Return to the temple this evening. I promise you, your Supreme Lord is waiting for you exactly as you wish to see Him." Drawn by the strange priest's reassuring words, Ganapati Bhatta returned to the temple courtyard as evening fell. When he looked up at the Snana Mandap, he fell to his knees in pure awe. Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra had transformed. They were adorned in the magnificent Hathi Besha (Gajanana Besha), wearing beautifully decorated elephant masks that looked exactly like Lord Ganesha. Beside them, Goddess Subhadra sat gracefully in a lotus form. Tears streamed down Ganapati Bhatta's face as he realized that Lord Jagannath is the ultimate reality who encompasses all forms and He will go to any length to reciprocate the pure, innocent love of a devotee. Since that day, every year on Snana Purnima, Lord Jagannath takes on the spectacular Hathi Besha, reminding the world that the Divine is bound by nothing but love. 🙏✨
