Every heartbeat shifts the blood in my finger, which affects how much light makes it through. Less light means lower voltage.
The light goes through my finger, gets detected by the photodiode, converts the light into current, which the op-amp amplifies and converts into voltage, and the voltage is read by the oscilloscope (graph on the screen).
