Hungary’s Csodaszarvas - the Miraculous Stag - was part of a brilliant Halloween Parade tonight in Longford, which I was honored to join alongside my Hungarian counterpart & friend Gergely Bánhegyi.

She was seventeen when the Titanic began to sink. Kate Gilnagh had boarded as a third-class passenger at Queenstown, sharing a cabin with three other girls from County Longford. After the collision, the way up from steerage was blocked. Crewmen turned people back. A man she later called her guardian angel forced a barrier open. Higher up, alone on a nearly empty deck, she found a stranger who let her stand on his shoulders so she could climb over the railing to the boat deck. A lifeboat was already being lowered. A crewman stopped her and said it was full. Kate, who had never been a liar, said the first thing that came to her: “I want to go with my sister.” There was no sister in the boat. Her only sister was already in New York. The man believed her and waved her in. She had to stand because the boat was crowded. From the water she watched the ship go down and later said the screams of those left behind were the worst sound she had ever heard. She reached New York alive. Her sister, who had already begun arranging a requiem mass, opened the door to find her standing there. Years later Kate told the story to Walter Lord for A Night to Remember. She described the locked gates, the strangers who helped her, and the single sentence that got her into the boat. She lived until 1971. Thousands of people boarded the Titanic believing they were starting a new life. Kate survived because, at the moment the ship was disappearing beneath her, she invented a sister who was not there. One sentence was the difference between becoming a memory and living to tell it.🌹

I was in Ballymahon, County Longford yesterday. It seems to be a thriving market town benefiting from the nearby Centre Parcs resort which brings jobs & prosperity to the area.

Tailteann Cup FT: Offaly 3-22, Down 1-20. A huge win for Offaly against the Tailteann Cup favourites. They showed serious character, playing some heart attack football but have turned their season around spectacularly. A serious win for Offaly
