I don’t share stuff too often, or maybe I have. But I wanted to let people know about my story of getting hit by a drunk driver This whole thing happened in 2008. The night it happened was quick. The aftermath was an eternity. I was 20 when this happened. My friend at the time and my twin brother were also in the car that night. We were headed out to meet some friends and just hang out. The car my twin brother and I shared was a Kia Rio. That car was known to have bad safety features Brother was driving, friend was in the passenger seat, and I was sitting in the back. All I saw was high beams, and I looked back to see a lifted truck. He clipped the backside of the car. I remember my brother trying to get a hold of the wheel and my friend’s head smashing the passenger-side window. The last thing I remember after that was tumbling in the car and my face smashing against the back of the seat. Apparently my seat cracked, gave way. I was tossed around in the car and then ejected out the back window, over the street, into the shoulder of the highway. I was thrown into trees, shrubs, bushes, and rocky ground What was explained to me was: the seat belt cracked at the buckle point. I broke my nose on the front seat, broke two ribs being thrown around in the car, and then had glass, rock, sticks, other debris in my skin. I have really bad scarring on my arms, back, and head. The car had tumbled off the road I woke up in a daze to see there was an EMT already there, with my brother and friend screaming, looking for me and crying. I had a rock embedded in my right wrist, and I didn’t know my other arm was dislocated, probably due to adrenaline. I limped all the way down off the shoulder and did not know how bad it really was. Apparently I was rambling about trying to find my glasses and phone. By the time I was standing still they saw me, and the paramedics told me to sit down. I told them I was fine. That was until he told me to look down at my feet, I was losing a lot of blood. The EMTs were right behind us when it happened and watched it unfold They did find the drunk driver jogging at the side of the road, beat up, and they asked him what he was doing and his words… “I’m jogging next to the river.” Still drunk out of his fucking mind. The officer was pissed and they had found an alcohol-filled box with cans opened and unopened. I made it to the hospital and this part sucked. I didn’t get to have any local anesthetic, painkiller, or anything of the sort. They never did explain this part, why they didn’t allow it. I remember screaming and biting on something as they cleaned my back and arms. Having stitches done with nothing for the pain is agonizing. Having a tube put through your ribs with nothing for the pain is worse. It was the most agonizing time of my life. I’m trying to find old hospital footage, but I’m sure that was deleted with my mom’s old phone. But here are pictures of my car and the truck that hit us.
