Lede: “Who should cover the costs of climate change?” Answer: It won’t be oil companies. Sue an entire industry and consumers pay. Easier to tax, but then no fees for private lawyers. nytimes.com/2026/10/05/us/po… via @NYTimes

The number of surcharges on goods and services right now is insane. I'm actively switching vendors. Don't quote me $1,000 and then bill $1,200 bc there's a credit card surcharge, a fuel surcharge, an employee fund surcharge, etc. Quote me $1,200 to start.

Remember when the Vatican spent 500 years trying to align the printing press?
1501: Pope Alexander VI criticizes Gutenberg’s printing press safety “The art of printing can be of great service in so far as it furthers the circulation of useful & tested books; but it can bring about serious evils l..it will, therefore, be necessary to maintain full control”

The more powerful a new technology is, the more the powerful seek to control or suppress it. Powerful incumbents tend to emphasize risk to everyone as a pretext for reducing the risk it poses to them.

Donald Trump is the authoritarian socialist president that Republicans used to warn about.
If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America, $5,000! Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to signing those checks!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This repeats a promise Trump made in September 2026. The US has approximately 250 million adult citizens so the total cost would be over 1.25 trillion dollars. Congress must approve any such federal spending. nytimes.com/2026/09/10/us/… pbs.org/newshour/polit…

Everyone hates your "populist" economic policies, and they're probably going to cost the Republicans the midterms. Quit trying to make tariffs happen.
This is not an economy that is working for average Americans, or for American families. Unless we address this with populist economic proposals that strengthen the middle class and make family formation affordable again, we are in danger of a massive radicalization of younger voting blocks locked out of the American Dream.

I remember when this was called "election denying" and the person claiming the stolen election would be banned from news shows because that opinion is so out of bounds.
Chuck Schumer in an interview with Semafor “Senate is 50-50. We’re right on the edge of winning. Two things could have us lose. One, they steal the election. … The second thing is money. They have obscene amounts of money. All we need is enough to be able to answer the sh*t they’re going to throw at us, and we’re doing well there.” Schumer also said Trump’s campaign travel helps Democrats because the president “talks about the things people don’t give a damn about.” He framed the whole race this way: “Can an enormous Republican advantage in dollars defeat an enormous Democratic advantage in candidates and in political climate? I think we win.” semafor.com/article/09/30/20…

The mainstream media has been unwilling to interrogate the role of Steve Bannon, Jack Posobiec, Mike Cernovich, Tucker Carlson, Curtis Yarvin & similar postliberal grifters in promoting COVID lockdowner alarmism in early 2020 because the same media also adopted these positions.

'The professors I had who got their doctorates in the late 1960s or before were of course all liberal or progressive. But they were mostly into the idea of arguing about stuff and following ideas and new analyses to novel conclusions. The ones who’d come of age a decade later were more like ministers who were teaching young preachers the one correct interpretation of the Bible so that they could go out and enforce a single reading of every aspect of American culture.' 'The university wasn’t an experimental space, a place to work out ideas. It was a training ground to turn out a sales force who would fan out across the country pushing a particular product—a sort of elitist, contemptuous view of everyday life pulled from parts of Marx and Freud, that mostly held people were completely hoodwinked and shaped by forces they couldn’t quite understand. Everything was “determined” by economics, psychology, capitalism, etc., to such a degree that no one, except the wise professor of course, could see through the manipulation.' Me, talking to @joeljmiller a while back. substack.com/home/post/p-218…

Hockey fans: Please make the refs tell us what they're reviewing and why and how they came to a decision. NHL: Best we can do is an awkward pre-game pep talk once a year.
Referee Wes McCauley got on the mic last night in Boston to kick off the NHL season. Chris Rooney did the same in Raleigh.

#NJDevils It looks like our first game is going to be on ESPN+ with national announcers. I don't love that we won't have the local broadcasters on it - but on the other hand, we don't have to worry about our play-by-play guy calling us the Rangers.
