A Review: Ordinals & ICP NFTs
As you may know, our team has dedicated the past few months to developing ordinal technology on the Internet Computer. We firmly believe that Ordinals are the perfect complement to ICP NFTs, representing polar opposites that, when considered together, cover about every conceivable use case for NFTs.
The Bitcoin Trade-offs:
Bitcoin ordinals can be likened to an 'expensive canvas'. When you upload artwork to Bitcoin, you gain access to super-premium storage, ensuring absolute certainty that your assets will be hosted indefinitely.
However, this benefit comes with trade-offs in terms of cost and speed. It's no secret that creating and transferring ordinals within the Bitcoin network is both costly and slow. The process of inscribing or transferring an ordinal can range from 10 minutes to several hours depending on how much you are willing to pay.
This explains why we're observing instances where famous artworks are being inscribed and luxury brands like Bugatti are making their presence felt there. Bitcoin's attributes make it an ideal platform for whistleblowing or leaking information. Moreover, as a mature and widely trusted blockchain, Bitcoin's reputation enhances its appeal to creators.
These trade-offs are precisely why Bitcoin isn't an ideal choice for launching assets intended for games requiring micro-transactions, or apps needing a Web2 user experience.
Internet Computer Trade-offs:
Undoubtedly, the Internet Computer stands out as the quickest and most cost-efficient blockchain to engage with as an end user. It's the sole blockchain I've come across capable of providing a Web2-like experience while still hosting assets on-chain.
The trade-off here is permanence. ICP contracts are subject to mutability, necessitating ongoing cycles management to ensure asset availability.
For developers seeking competitive speed and cost-efficiency, the IC is the prime option. Notably, the IC features zero gas fees and offers 2-second finality, requiring no tokens or wallets. This explains how applications like @nuancedapp can employ an NFT article access model that rivals Web2. Depending on the nature of the purchase, users may prefer immediate access (rather than waiting for 10 minutes to an hour).
Wrapped Ordinals on ICP:
Our team is on the brink of introducing a wrapped ordinals standard on ICP. This innovation combines the best elements of both worlds, significantly easing the entry of ordinals into the realm of dApps. While not eradicating all pain points on either blockchain, it does create a fresh and distinctive alternative for developers to contemplate.
What lends extra significance to this is the ICP<>BTC integration, permitting IC smart contracts to sign Bitcoin transactions. This means they can send and receive Bitcoin without necessitating wrapping. The distribution of private keys across all nodes in the subnet negates the requirement for a centralized intermediary.
The Future:
I firmly believe in a multi-chain future. The diverse array of needs is simply too extensive for any single chain to adequately address them all. Personally, I hold the conviction that both ICP and BTC will play pivotal roles in Web3's landscape of digital ownership. Naturally, they won't be the sole contenders in this arena and I look forward to learning about and using even more solutions! $BTC $ICP

Today, most Web3 is built on AWS, and just keeps its tokens and NFTs on a blockchain. Usually that blockchain also runs on AWS
