A 4" or 5" plant April 1 is going to be a lot more effective at preventing nitrate loss than a 2" inch plant & 10 plants / sq ft is going to be more effective than 3 plants per / sq ft. More biomass April 1 is going to be more effective during that window.

Updates from #CANVAS2026:
Federico Rolle shared preliminary data from our @IllinoisNrec-funded project assessing nitrogen and sulfur interactions on corn yield and NUE in Illinois.
Great job presenting the work and representing the team! 🌽👏📊

First for me… picking up gooseneck corn… picked up a rock, went up the gathering chains, across the auger, under the feeder house, over the rock trap under the beater and into the cylinder where it broke out the whole concave and send it up into the rotors.

#Illini David Mirkovic had an emergency appendectomy last night, further delaying his return to the court, according to Brad Underwood.
Andrej Stojakovic and Zvonimir Ivisic will play in tomorrow’s season opener. Lincoln Williams will be questionable.

I studied Ag Business and Econ decades ago. It bogles the mind that in 2026 it revolutionary to really understand the point of diminishing returns of your variable input costs. Any farm chasing crop ‘looks’ over econometric outcomes probably should no longer be farming.

Average first accumulating snow dates are right around the corner! However, it appears some areas may see their first accumulating snow later than average this year. Much of the purple-shaded area is trending toward the middle of November rather than early in the month. For areas farther south, a lot will depend on what happens with the polar vortex and the ongoing weakening of the polar vortex (arctic air potential).

~Arctic Air & Winter Storm Risks~
This is a gutsy prediction, and I know I'll get chewed up for days if it doesn't verify. However, the well-advertised Sudden Stratospheric Warming event will lead to a favorable alignment of teleconnections, opening the door for Arctic air to spill into the Midwest and Northeast rather than remaining displaced toward the West and Alaska. The AO (Arctic Oscillation), NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation), and EPO (Eastern Pacific Oscillation) are all expected to trend negative around Thanksgiving. This isn't a typical setup during a strong El Niño, but the rapid weakening of the polar vortex will be the wildcard that changes the equation. I'm confident we'll have legitimate threats for winter storms and Arctic blasts from late November through early December. This is a bold call, but the atmospheric signals are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
U of I cataloging earth worms in the tillage site at Piatt. Natural drainage in the strip till and notill. Not in the conventional tillage..
NREC and U of I Tillage trial. Strip till cover. Strip till. Conventional and notill. Piatt county research farm. 5th year of yields coming soon maybe when we get a rain day.

I've had multiple calls from farmers, retailers & the general public about why anhydrous going on already. I am not the anhydrous police, and I do understand reasons why this happens, even if I don't agree. I also think this is huge mistake right now and we are wasting $$.
For fall anhydrous ammonia, the recommendation is to wait for 50°F and falling. We aren't there yet and it may take a little longer to get there this year. Read more: crops.extension.iastate.edu/… #IowaAg #NitrogenManagement
