The Boiling Frog Parable: A frog suddenly dropped into a pot of boiling water will instinctively leap out of danger. However, a frog placed in lukewarm water brought to a boil slowly, will not perceive the danger and will be gradually cooked. This metaphor illustrates the NH Republicans’ inability or unwillingness to acknowledge and respond to the gradual and escalating threat posed by the Free State Agenda to their own party.

Meet the Pawzoffskis. Stew and Willa grew up in Gilford, married and planned to raise their kids on the mountain just as they were. So, in 2022 they were furious when Free Staters set their sights on dismantling Gunstock Mountain Resort.
You may remember hearing about the political controversy playing out that resulted in the entire management team resigning under protest and the resort being shuttered. This was the first time many citizens heard of the The Free Staters, the Free State Project or about Free State-aligned politicians. Their existence largely faded from people’s radar after Governor Sununu’s dramatic call for the resignation of three Republican state representatives and the extremists they appointed to the Gunstock Area Commission.
This cautionary tale bears repeating because like the two earlier Free State experiments, Grafton and Croydon, it demonstrates an agenda and shows a pattern. It only takes a few bad apples to spoil the barrel. Fortunately, these stories also show that when a Free State power play occurs, the community will fight back. But tellingly, over time, like bad pennies, many of the Free State-aligned Republicans keep getting elected.
Gunstock resort has been owned and run for 86 years by Belknap County. The Belknap County’s delegation of 18 legislators in the House of Representatives have a duty to appoint members to Gunstock Area Commission, which oversees resort operations.
The Belknap Delegation and its Chairman at the time, Rep. Michael Sylvia, R-Belmont, a Free Stater who was also the lead sponsor of a failed constitutional amendment for New Hampshire to secede from the United States, appointed Dr. David Strang of Gilmanton and Peter Ness of Belmont as Gunstock commissioners.
Strang and Ness engaged in a highly publicized power struggle over the control of the resort, halting the master plan and directing the commission toward what was widely considered an attempt to disrupt operations and undermine the county asset in order to privatize the resort. The Free State Agenda opposes government ownership of commercial enterprises as this conflicts with their anti-government and free market principles. Therefore, public assets like Gunstock should be sold or leased into private hands to reduce the footprint of local government.
When the Belknap Delegation held an emergency meeting for the resignation of the Gunstock Commissioners Strang and Ness, Chairman Sylvia and Rep. Norm Silber of Gilford, both of whom were called out by Sununu to resign, did not show up for the meeting. In addition, the following four Belknap County State Representatives were no shows, each of whom are currently Republican incumbents running for reelection in 2026: Glen Aldrich of Gilford, Paul Terry of Alton, Peter Varney of Alton, and Barbara Comtois of Center Barnstead.
In addition, Rep. Comtois was a member of the disbanded, first ever Gunstock audit committee, and she has since continued to introduce predatory legislation attempts to control Gunstock. The vote to accept Strang’s reluctant resignation was 9-1 with Rep. Thomas Ploszaj from Center Harbor, casting the single dissenting vote. Ploszaj is also currently running for reelection. In November, Dr. Strang ran unsuccessfully for Belknap Country Treasurer.
Plenty has been published on this controversy. The Pawzoffskis and their community were not willing to let their mountain be “McVailed,” where corporate policies, unaffordable prices, mega-pass crowds, and new mountainside condominiums take over. The battle may not be over because many of the Free State-aligned Republicans are still in office and sympathetic to the “McMountain” agenda. But this battle was never about dollars and cents. It was about heart and soul. Paws off our mountain Free Staters!

The Strangers
In 2026, it is estimated that 34% of the members of the NH House of Representatives and 25% of the members of the NHState Senate are Free State-aligned politicians who ran as Republicans because their third-party option would not have secured their election and fulfilled their pledge to The Free State Project.

Meet the Sensibles from Grafton, NH. Abel and Bea had married and started raising their family over a decade ago when the Free State Project targeted their small town for an early experiment to take over government, slash public spending, and test extreme deregulation. “The Free Town Project,” was a single-town version of the larger vision the Free State Project (FSP) has for the state of New Hampshire.
Dozens of FSP participants moved to Grafton to implement a takeover. The result was a decade of disfunction where Free Staters gained control of local government offices and voted in changes including a 30% budget reduction. This led to the defunding of essential services like road maintenance, trash collection, streetlights, municipal building upkeep, the senior citizen council, and law enforcement. Consequently, the police department was reduced to a single officer with insufficient funds to repair their sole patrol vehicle.
Grafton experienced increased crime, an unusually high influx of sex offenders, the first recorded murders and crisis of aggressive black bears (lured in by unmanaged garbage disposal) raiding homes, killing livestock & pets, and attacking residents. By 2016 it was abundantly clear that the Free State Project’s experiment was a bust.
Frustrated residents like the Sensibles took back their town and Free Staters began leaving to settle in various other towns throughout NH.

The Horseshoe Theory: The far-left and far-right are not opposites on a straight line but instead come together resembling the ends of a horseshoe. Fringe groups are closer to each other than either is to the political center. Shared characteristics include: rigid interpretation of politics, conspiracy theories, aversion to moderate perspectives, “Us VS Them” attitude.

Goal: To persuade one Republican at a time to take this threat seriously. The Free State’s influence within the NH Republican Party is real. Free State-aligned politicians continue to be elected as Republicans. If left unchecked, this radical agenda will continue to shape the New Hampshire GOP and the state’s future. Dutch is ready to be unleashed, empowering you to make informed decisions about our future when you cast your vote on November 3, 2026.
