On June 4, 2017, the 34-year-old engineer sergeant was killed in Mali during a hazing incident by fellow special operators who broke into his room, restrained him, and applied a chokehold that led to his death by asphyxiation.
From Lubbock, Texas, he served with the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) after enlisting in 2012, completed Special Forces training, and deploying twice to Afghanistan.
Survived by his wife Michelle and their two sons, Melgar was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, leaving a legacy of service and a case that exposed serious issues of accountability within elite military units.

The Trump administration is weaponizing the justice system to deny independent and unconflicted legal protection to tens of thousands of unaccompanied children as young as two years old.
Allowing attorneys hired by @HHSGov to legally represent unaccompanied children would create a fundamental and unavoidable conflict of interest. These children deserve proper, unbiased legal support that follows the longstanding precedent of utilizing outside independent legal service providers.
