Vitalik is saying $ETH is a life raft
It is the alternative to monetary systems where money supply is expanded by governments and central banks
With fixed-ish* supply tokens, you are protected from the money printing that makes your dollar buy less
Expanding on why I believe "ETH as store of value (SoV)" makes much more sense to focus on than "ETH as fee-burning token".
Three primary reasons:
1. ETH as fee-burning token never was as strong as it seemed
2. Optimizing for ETH as fee-burning token would demand Ethereum and ETH function in ways that are very hard to make compatible with decentralization and capture resistance.
3. Meanwhile, optimizing for ETH as SoV is aligned with Ethereum focusing on its unique strengths (decentralization and CROPS)
EIP-1559 (including its burn) is fine and good, we should keep them. But we should not feel sad if fee burn is < 10% of breakeven indefinitely; the value of ETH comes from elsewhere.
The core idea: the big thing that people appreciate about Ethereum is decentralization and CROPS. The main pragmatic benefit that these things translate into is stability. SoV is the category where that is not an unneeded extra we merely put effort into for ideological reasons, but rather a pragmatic strength from the perspective of people putting in their assets. And in the era of AI disruption, stability will be highly valued.

Playing in Centuries: Why CROPS and a Quantum Deadline Matter for Ethereum
@bsmokes has spent almost four years building @PistachioFi, a self-custodial wallet, on top of Ethereum
I hosted him on @SmartEconomyPod’s Crypto Coffee & Blockchain Beer X Space on Friday to get a builder’s answer to a question...
Is CROPS a mission, or an academic exercise?
Critics have called the @ethereumfndn's new focus too abstract to matter, but Brian ships product on this chain every week, so I asked him directly
*What CROPS is*
The EF published its mandate in March 2026
It names four properties Ethereum must keep, no matter what else changes:
> Censorship resistance
> Open source
> Privacy
> Security
(@VitalikButerin has since added a fifth: capture resistance)
The mandate says these cannot be displaced by any other priority
**What a builder gets from CROPS**
I asked Brian, "does CROPS gives you ammunition when pitching Pistachio to new users or vault maintainers?"
His answer was blunt: no
The average user does not care about censorship resistance, and he knows it
BUT, he called it the base layer everyone builds on
He said that the CROPS work is unsexy. It does not add transactions per second. It does not put money in anyone’s pocket today
Though, his framing on Ethereum's time horizon stuck with me...
Most chains are playing a game measured in years or decades
Ethereum is playing in centuries
He pointed to where the money sits as proof
Bitcoin and Ethereum hold the lion’s share of TVL because people trust them as network's
(I'd add it's because they're not susceptible to nation-state attacks)
He noted that even TraderTraitor (i.e., the DPRK) moves stolen funds to Ethereum after a hack, because nobody can stop the transfer
That is a grim data point, understandably, but it also says something about which networks people expect to keep running
***The quantum clock***
At Devcon 8 this week, @drakefjustin said he hopes Ethereum completes its post-quantum transition by December 2028
The EF’s September roadmap still says December 2029, but it'll be reassessed in January 2027
So 2028 is a hope, not a commitment. If this timeline plays it, it would require about three more network upgrades in roughly two years
On that note, when making upgrades on Pistachio, Brian follows EF updates and waits for something substantial before he acts
He said the researchers on quantum-resistance that he trusts do not expect a quantum break within two years
He defers to them, and that he likes that the EF is spending that time preparing anyway
He also credited the @ethlabs_org spinout for taking scaling work off the EF’s plate
That team is currently working on cutting block time from 12 seconds to six
****Where privacy and quantum meet****
To address the ever-growing privacy meta, Brian is adding stealth addresses to Pistachio so paying someone doesn’t automatically reveal their other holdings
Today, realistically, most people Brian speaks with get that privacy by routing through a centralized exchange first (though there are decentralized options available). He wants to remove that step
While researching privacy solutions, he found ERC-8441, a draft from August 2026
It is a hybrid post-quantum stealth address scheme that pairs ML-KEM-768 with the secp256k1 math wallets already use
The reason it matters now? Retroactive privacy loss
Classical stealth announcements could later reveal which payments went to the same recipient
A post-quantum announcement layer could offer a solution that won't require launching and using a new contract
Brian’s open question is whether to ship classic stealth addresses now and upgrade, or wait for the hybrid scheme
*****Why not integrate current privacy solutions?*****
CROPS reads like philosophy until you look at what it produces
@aztecnetwork is one example of those principles in practice
Aztec is the only ZK rollup with a Stage 2 designation, meaning no Security Council can roll back its contracts
(If the team walked away tomorrow, the network would keep running)
Even though the network is immutable, Pistachio is not integrating Aztec yet -- its native account abstraction breaks the single public address Pistachio uses across every chain
But he said the ideals are right, and the question is 'when,' not 'if'
I believe we may be reaching a point where more than two networks are hard for a nation-state to shut down
And ultimately, that is what the CROPS vision is for
Is it a mission or academic exercise? Will Pistachio’s actual decision be to ship classic stealth addresses now, or wait for the hybrid scheme?

"Step one of winning is surviving… then the next step is getting Ethereum actually used at a much higher scale." - @VitalikButerin
Vitalik says @ethereum is making sure it is fully secure against quantum computers and AI, so it can scale into prediction markets, decentralized social, identity and DAOs.
He also says private transactions that cost more than 300,000 gas today will get much cheaper and become quantum safe.
I asked him about the next decade of Ethereum.
> What used to be hard or expensive on Ethereum that will become easy and cheap in the next 18 to 24 months?
> What becomes newly practical for users and builders over the next 3 to 5 years of lean Ethereum?
> What does winning look like for Ethereum in the next decade, and what early signals would show it?
> How does Ethereum's edge with institutions compound as more assets move on-chain?

Major life event: I just got @DylanGrabowski from the X Handle Marketplace!
Go check out handles.x.com to see if you can get the handle you've always dreamt of
The next change, I'm eyeing "Dylan," but that owner is a pretty cool Coloradan working in the Space industry
Let's fight the fear today and keep building in public... this is my first agentically edited long-form video
How I look at content marketing for blockchain ecosystems:
> Discovery: How do you meet people where they're at?
> Education: How do you teach them about your work?
> Engagement: How do you hear what they want to learn?
> Retention: How do you keep them sticking around?
After 8.5 years, this is just scratching the surface of what I've learned
What new things about content marketing and narrative building did you learn?
On-chain privacy is a lot like the police: no one thinks they need it until they do
Much like the police, the word "privacy" can evoke very different feelings
For example: Why would you need privacy if you're not doing anything bad?
Or: My neighbor *did not get* wrench attacked because no one could see what was in their wallet
@aztecnetwork launched Tierra this week, offering:
> the privacy of cash
> the programmability of smart contracts
> the security of mathematics
All without having to trust a centralized sequencer or Security Council to keep the network running
Aztec relies on a decentralized network of sequencers and provers, secured by ethereum:0xa27ec0006e59f245217ff08cd52a7e8b169e62d2, with no single company controlling block production
And V6 of its Stage 2 zk-rollup introduced some major upgrades:
> ~1s private proof generation (2x faster)
> Ethereum-to-Aztec messages in as little as 12s (previously ~2m on average)
> Formal verification of core cryptography
> AI-powered security testing
> Fixes for critical vulnerabilities discovered in V5
What is formal verification?
Imagine building a bridge
You could drive thousands of cars across it every day to test whether it breaks
Or you could use mathematics to prove that specific parts of its design meet defined safety requirements
That's the difference between testing and formal verification
Aztec has combined mathematical verification with stricter cryptographic proof validation, improved security checks, and automated vulnerability testing
The result is a significantly hardened version of the network
Now, privacy is becoming more practical, cross-chain usability is improving, and security is becoming an even bigger priority
Private transactions are starting to feel less experimental and more like everyday software
It's a good time to start looking into Aztec if you're:
> a developer who wants to build programmable smart contracts with zero-knowledge proofs
> a user who wants to send stablecoins and explore private savings through @zk_money
>an institution interested in bringing assets like tokenized equities or mortgages on-chain while protecting sensitive information
It’s 2026, privacy shouldn’t require permission from a centralized entity
And using it shouldn’t feel like an experiment

Today was one of those days where I felt like I was spinning my wheels on my agents -- like I just wasted hours of my life
I'm building a "Waterfall Agent" that repurposes long-form content
One of those tools I want is a Tweet composer that will:
> transcribe video
> extract key themes
> make tweets from key themes
> make tweets sound exactly like me
> one-shot the copy and don't mess up
Last week with Grok Bot I scraped every tweet I've ever written, and thought it'd be good training material
It wasn't
I ended up getting a bunch of hot garbage, except it kind of sounded like me (so, heck, maybe it was on point lol)
What am I going to do moving forward?
Like a luddite, I'm going to hand craft tweets for each of my long-form and short-form videos that come out of the Waterfall Agent
Then, I'm going to feed my agent the copy for each of these tweets
Rinse and repeat the process over several iterations
I'm not sure it's going to work, but I'm gonna give it the old college effort
For curious minds, this is the first AI edited video on the 4 Pillars of Content Marketing Blockchain Ecosystems

🧵 Publishing more content isn't a strategy for winning the minds of users
It won't help craft and disseminate your narrative either
Various funnels, or pillars, help carry the load
Here's the framework I've build over 8.5 years of creating content in blockchain 👇
Pillar 4: Retention
No one has time to watch every corner of an ecosystem; you've got to help them out
A weekly newsletter does it for them
What's most important, though... consistency
The quiet weeks when it feels like nothing is happening is when it matters most
Which of the 4 pillars do blockchain ecosystems overlook the most?
