For 40 years, the only combination consistently holding down deficits has been a Democratic president & Republicans Congress. Unified govts are the most irresponsible. GOP presidents team up with Dem Congress to spend GOP Congress becomes deficit hawks when Dems win the WH.

Under divided government, a much larger GOP House majority worked to lower the deficit from 8.3% of GDP in 2011 to 2.4% in 2015. Today under unified GOP government with tiny majorities, it's around 6%.

Pretty amazing that the House (likely 220R-215D) would have flipped to Dems this year while the White House/Senate flipped to the GOP, had it not been for Rs winning a majority on the NC Supreme Court in 2022, allowing GOP legislators to redraw three Dem seats into oblivion.
