Good Morning, Please join me for a daily scripture break. Today, we will take a look at how should Christians appropriately adhere to authority. Acts 5:29: "Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!” AND Acts 4:19: "But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to Him? You be the judges!” These scripture references from the book of Acts shed some light on the boldness and focus of the Apostles in the early Church. There are times when God’s Will is THE priority.  We also have to remember God is a god of order and He never contradicts His Word.  Those in authority whether in government, church leadership or family households will be held accountable by God for the administration of their offices/responsibilities.   I know there are some who struggle with authority in their lives.  Usually they have suffered a deeply traumatic betrayal and/or harm by an authority figure. The American public trust has been so severely tested and decimated in recent years, I certainly can understand the hesitation to submit to untrustworthy officials.  The Kingdom of God is orderly and hierarchical.  As members of the Body of Christ, the Holy Spirit is always available to clarify any confusion about our priorities in life and how to pray for God’s help.  Unlike the flawed human beings in positions of authority who will fail in their responsibilities at some point; ultimately God assumes responsibility for His institutions and assures us of His protection.  After researching scriptures on “authority” there were several categories of authority I noted.  Let’s review the categories below. Beginning with God’s Authority, the best example provided of God’s authority was presented by Jesus.  During an encounter with the Pharisees and Herodians who were attempting to entrap Jesus, they inquired about whether they should pay taxes.  In the books of Mark, Matthew, and Luke the following similar responses were recorded. God’s Authority: 1.  Mark 12:17 - “Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” And they were amazed at him." 2. Matthew 22:21 - ““Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” 3. Luke 20:25 - “He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s." Jesus brilliantly describes how we are to obey both. There is a balance we are called to honor.  If we continue our examination we will find that superficially God and government authorities appear to be on equal footing in Jesus’ response.  That’s not the case. Let’s continue our survey. Government Authority: 1. Romans 13: 1-7 - “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” God takes the responsibility of holding governmental authorities accountable to Him.  The concept of governance is God’s idea not ours.  He then instructs His people to obey the governmental authorities.  God institutes order in every facet of our lives. Please read the passage above again. So what do we do when government authorities don’t recognize or ignore God’s authority? I’d guess most of you will know what I will say.  Pray II Chronicles 7:14.  God calls Christians to pray.  We are suppose to pray for our leaders daily, pray for our country daily, and be law-abiding citizens.  God wants those who violate His hierarchy/laws punished.   God isn’t against political discourse.  On the contrary, He expects His children to enter into the public square with a Christian worldview and present their ideas through the prism of the Word of God.  When we have politicians who are not faithful to their oath of office, violate the law, participate in corruption, etc., we should not sit idly by. We should seek guidance from the Holy Spirit and follow His instruction.  We are to lawfully fight for just laws and maintain public order and safety.  When we take God’s Word and use it as our blueprint for our actions God will see to it His Word doesn’t fail. 2. I Timothy 2:1-3 - "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior..." 3. Titus 3:1- “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good…” There it is. We are subject to rulers and authorities and called to be obedient to the laws of the land.  However, we are not obligated to violate our conscience.  We are called to “do whatever is good.”  There are numerous permutations of scenarios we could discuss. So rather than get bogged down in what ifs, let’s remember to pray daily, be obedient to God’s Word, and do not violate your conscience at the behest of another human being. Christians should not violate their conscience even if you are threatened with arrest or death. Do not transgress your beliefs. I know that sounds extreme but we can not deny the Christian faith. 4. I Peter 2:13-14 - “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by Him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right." Church Authority: 1. Hebrews 13:17 - “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you." 2. I Peter 5:5 - “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” The public has been inundated with Church scandals. Submitting and trusting church officials is more difficult than it used to be.  Pray for your church leaders daily. They carry monumental burdens to care for their congregations; assist them when you can. The best thing you can do for them is help them with solutions and don’t dump problems (with no proposed solutions) in their laps. Parental Authority: 1. Ephesians 6:1-3 - “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” 2. Proverbs 15:5 - “A fool spurns a parent’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence." 3. Colossians 3:20 - "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.” As you can see, there are multiple levels of authority. Due to the length of the post, we are not reviewing other examples of authority such as spiritual authority/responsibility in the household, business owner authority, etc. This study reinforced for me how meticulous God really is.  God requires order and discipline in His Kingdom. We have to trust God’s Wisdom and Will to submit to the various levels of authority in our lives.  We can trust Him implicitly. I hope this helps. Many blessings to you. Peace and be prepared.
