This month on “Deadly Passions, Terrible Joys,” I'm digging into that race with help from award-winning journalist @ELMoskowitz, whose book “The Hardest, Longest Race” reconstructs the event in gorgeous detail. us.macmillan.com/books/97812…

In 1909, Ford sent two examples of the new Model T to compete in a race from New York City to Seattle, Washington. And while a Ford crossed the finish line first, it had to CHEAT to do so. youtube.com/watch?v=xJyVv2e0…

One of the few things more annoying than AI-generated, author-baiting "marketing" scam emails is when that outreach is meant for another author entirely ... but then they ping you again anyway for not replying. (Though this DOES make me want to read "Lightning Beneath the Sea.")

Listening to the Sox in the car with a new fan … Me: Whoa, the Sox have bunted successfully twice this inning! 7yo: You’re allowed to BUNT!?!! Me: Yeah. Do you remember what a bunt is? 7yo: I forget.

Elizabeth, what a pleasure! This one's a deep cut, for those interested in the long journey behind a book. And thanks for the very blurbable "I’m sure it took fricking forever to get all of those little details, but they were worth it," which warms my rabbit-hole-loving heart :)
The exceptional @ELMoskowitz gave me several hours of his time to talk about his latest book, "The Hardest, Longest Race", including what it took to revive a race from 1909! Check out the full conversation: deadlypassionsterriblejoys.s…

This was fun to write, about a 101yo @Harvard alum who grew up in modest circumstances, served in WWII, became a pioneering postwar high-tech exec, and turned to art in retirement. Mainly a sculptor, his paintings now hang in Zimmer Hall (Science Center) current.fas.harvard.edu/stor…

When you find the great @MassDCR pool at Magazine Beach is closed on a perfect summer Sunday because of a life guard shortage, but at least you had bagels, smoked salmon, and capers in your pool bag

All’s well that ends well; enough lifeguards rallied in the afternoon to open the pool, and the bagel-eaters got to swim, too

As a former @BostonGlobe transportation reporter, I shed a tear at the sight of this misplaced child-size @MBTA Green Line sweatshirt at PDX airport (3,000 miles from Park Street)

Honored to be highlighted among the @csmonitor's best books of the summer. Thank you, @Danny_Heitman — “voluminous research and wry humor” is a great compliment, and I'm going to have to start using "moneyed rake" & "precarious odyssey" in my book talks! csmonitor.com/layout/set/amp…

Love these graphics @StMartinsPress designedto promote THE HARDEST, LONGEST RACE! There's still time to pick up a copy for any dads — or anyone who likes a good yarn, braided with snapshots of America in 1909 — you know as a gift today! Happy to mail you a signed bookplate, too!
