Some of my favourite parts of the EIGER image we just released
1) a lensed galaxy at redshift z~4 seen through the shelled stellar halo of a foreground elliptical galaxy...

And this seems to be the moral of the story: the most distant LAEs sit inside ionised bubbles that appear too big to attribute them to the LAEs themselves, given how faint they are. This implies they are being helped by a population of even fainter galaxies we are yet to detect!

#JamesWebb's "too massive" galaxies may be even more massive.
Clara Giménez Arteaga finds that being able to resolve galaxies in sufficient detail yields up to 10× higher stellar masses, compared to unresolved measurements.

You're looking at 45,000+ galaxies.
This image was taken as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) — a massive science program that’s revolutionizing what we know about galaxies in the early universe: go.nasa.gov/3CdLq0s
Here are the highlights ⬇️

ALT Thousands of small galaxies are scattered on a black background. Some are noticeably spirals, either face-on or edge-on, while others are blobby ellipticals. Many are too small to discern any structure. A few spirals are bluish, but most of the galaxies appear yellow or red. A handful of stars display eight-point diffraction spikes.

With @William_M_Baker, @ENelsonAstro and #JADES, we have found this interesting galaxy, 700 million years after the Big Bang (redshift 7.43). We have carefully measured how rapidly this galaxy grows, discovering that it is growing inside-out.

New JWST paper: the sizes of galaxies that shouldn't exist!
Josephine Baggen finds (in her very first paper!) that the candidate massive early galaxies that were found last summer with JWST are tiny, with a mean half-light radius of ~150 pc.

JWST images of early galaxies have turned up a population of flat, red, extended disks that may have been entirely missed by previous surveys. @AASNova

Rad talk at CU this week by Dr. Watkins @astro_watkins and Dr. Lindgren @astro_kjell, who spent 170 days on the ISS @Space_Station in ‘22. AMAZING stories. One ended, "That shooting star you see in the night sky might actually be someone's dirty laundry...or worse." @EGonzales788

Big Data is all around us these days--but did you know how in 1912, its pioneer in astronomy, Henrietta Leavitt, discovered a method to chart vaster-than-ever-before distances in the Universe? Find out how in Episode 3 of The Open Universe podcast! theopenuniverse.org/#episode…
Being on @60Minutes tonight might have been the highlight of my career. Thank you @CBS, @ScottPelley, Aaron Weisz, and @Ian_Flick for making this such an amazing and seamless experience I'll never forget! The full segment is online here: youtube.com/watch?v=dC1-qgR7…
