The 2023 Whitebark Pine Science and Management conference is now underway in Revelstoke, BC! #savethewhitebarkpine
The #whitebark pine story isn’t just the story of a tree—it’s the story of an ecosystem. My favorite part of recent fieldwork was seeing this story play out, watching 4 different black 🐻 eating whitebark pine seeds from massive squirrel middens.

ALT Grand Teton and American Forests staff plant whitebark pine seeds in a forested area in Grand Teton National Park.
Direct seeding could expand #whitebark’s restoration 🧰, ⬆️ restoration in remote areas, ⬇️ time for compliance, and ⬇️ time between seed collection and restoration. @AmericanForests and @NatlParkService just began a seeding experiment to restore the tree and refine methodology.
We worked with @YellowstoneNPS, @GrandTetonNPS, and @GlacierNPS to implement an experiment that will help us operationalize direct seeding and learn what we can do to improve this technique as a restoration tool—all while actively restoring the species.

ALT A small whitebark pine seedling grows on the forest floor, surrounded by mature trees and bathed in light.
Thrilled to work with @NatlParkService to restore #whitebark! We’ll continue to expand the restoration toolkit by refining direct seeding and collect the seed that makes all restoration work possible. #SeedSeptember

However, we’ve got some research to do before direct seeding becomes operational. @AmericanForests is working with @YellowstoneNPS, @GrandTetonNPS, and @GlacierNPS to collect much needed data to see what dials 🎛️ we can turn to maximize success.
Tackling the seed challenge one day and one collection at a time! 🙌🏼

These Guayacan seeds are on to the next stage in their journey as building blocks for restoration. Moments like these often are unseen in the background of a long rewarding restoration process, but are beautiful to highlight when observed. @AmericanForests
