Matt von Hippel challenged the AI labs on August 7 to get to 9 loops. He said Claude's code may have been better engineering than people in his field would have done, "but not super-intelligently so." Song He's group in Beijing already had most of the answer.

Microsoft offered buyouts to about 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of the company. In the same three months it spent $45 billion on construction and equipment, which works out to $750,000 for each of those 60,000 people. (Microsoft didn't tie the buyouts to AI.)

"Keep working on this until I tell you to stop." An Anthropic physicist typed that to Claude and went to bed. A week later it beat a 2023 record. The key step cost about $100 of compute. Lance Dixon, whose group set that record, spent two weeks checking. youtu.be/avGGOFkhKT4

The AI super PACs' biggest fight was a New York House primary, $8 million against Alex Bores (he wrote New York's AI safety law) and about $20 million for him. He lost to Micah Lasher, who co-sponsored that law and told both camps, "I won't be taking my cues from either of you."

Meta's research credit went from $700 million in 2023 to $2 billion in 2024 to $3.9 billion in 2025. Meta says it's using incentives Congress set up, and points to about $200 billion of research spending over five years.

Gallup: 71% of Americans don't want an AI data center near them. Only 53% said that about a nuclear plant. On AI, each party is mostly arguing with itself. A bill banning AI companions for minors passed Senate Judiciary 22-0, though. youtu.be/ysUytw4qNpE

Meta's AI data centers are "pilot models" on its tax return, the IRS word for a prototype. The research credit cut Meta's taxes by $3.9 billion in 2025, more than Apple and Google got combined, and EY, its auditor, has pitched it to other companies. youtu.be/Lf-8qMWhaC8

Figure retired its F.02 humanoid robots by training them to jump into a 75-ton furnace of molten steel. Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested it. They got 6 melts done in 24 hours, with about 20 minutes each before a crust formed on top.

Taking each retired robot apart by hand would have delayed Figure's next model, so it melted them, custom actuators and all. Foundries in the US and Mexico said no, because of the lithium-ion batteries. A foundry in Imatra, Finland said yes. youtu.be/dcUpyit8LOg

Here's October 2026 in AI, in 12 minutes. Alphabet had its worst day ever, one hacker got into 100+ companies with AI agents for about $50 each, Claude sent Philadelphia police a fake murder tip during a test, and a bunch more: youtu.be/ikAr4KegMeM

More than 60% of hospital systems started using AI coding tools between 2023 and 2025. They read the whole chart and find every condition a lab value can support. Hospitals say the average admission got about 5% sicker from 2019 to 2024. Blue Cross never opened a chart.

Hospitals started finding a lot more anemia after surgery, and transfusions never went up with it. Blue Cross says AI coding tools added $942 million to what its plans paid from 2023 to 2025. Hospitals say their patients really are sicker. youtu.be/kT_enBdJT1Y

Somebody stole two trailers from a Fremont warehouse lot. One had an Nvidia logo on the side, and between them they held 20 tons of sand. PlusAI loads it to fake the weight of real freight on test runs.

It looks like the thieves forced the locks on the brake couplings, pried the doors open, found 20 tons of sand, and left both trailers in Newark, minutes away. The one with the Nvidia logo also says "Autonomy built for the long haul" down the side. youtu.be/IZfEnjySu5c
