Twenty-five years. I have spent a lot of time this week reflecting on September 11, 2001, what our country lost that day, and the journey we have taken since. I have often said that 9/11 was my generation’s Pearl Harbor moment. For many of us, myself included, it created a deep sense that we needed to serve. It is almost hard to comprehend that enough time has now passed for people inspired by that day to have served an entire 20-year military career and retired. Today, we honor the nearly 3,000 people who were killed. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger. And we honor those who suffered and died years later from illnesses connected to the dust and debris of Ground Zero. We also remember something harder to define: a piece of our country’s innocence that disappeared that morning. For me, the lasting lesson of September 11 has always been service. Wearing the uniform was one chapter of that service, but it does not have to end when the uniform comes off. This morning, I will spend time at a veterans housing community and later chair our local flooding task force. They are very different missions, but the purpose is the same: take care of people and leave this country a little better than we found it. Twenty-five years later, perhaps one of the best ways we can honor those we lost is to keep serving one another. Never forget.

At Senator Graham’s funeral today, @henrymcmaster told a story from the 2003 inauguration. When newly elected Senator Graham drew a bigger ovation than Fritz Hollings. Walking down the stairs, Graham responded to the difference in applause by grabbing Hollings’ hand and raising it in respect. Classy move. Naturally, as an SC political nerd, I had to find the clip. 👇
