Enjoyed @EdSignLectures tonight with @ChristophTester & @heathermole - interesting topic - “Interpreters as machines, cultural facilitators or allies?” - & an excellent turnout of 60 people. The venue at @DeafAction was great too. No bias there! “A hidden gem” quote unquote.

Sometimes the actions that interpreters are coming from good motivations, but they might be oppressive, potentially, if the deaf people are not included. So dynamics may change without the deaf people being aware that something has changed... – at Edinburgh, Scotland

The sign language interpreters seem to lack the proper language to talk about power dynamics in interpreting situations and instead they still feel stuck in the machine model. Often, their main value for reasoning is social justice + anti-oppression @EdSignLectures @HeriotWattBSL – at Edinburgh, Scotland

Curious about the impact of medical & cultural intervention on natural inclination to use gesture in Britain (compared to India) Any research on this? I.e. hearing aid wearers produce less gestures than those who don’t wear them? @EdSignLectures #signlanguageresearch #gesture 2/3

As academics: be aware of the ideologies that you have (as a field) and be careful to give labels; academic ideologies and experience might differ from everyday life experiences and ideologies, but might influence it to a great extent!! @EdSignLectures @AnneliesKusters

Gestures are fine in one-to-one language, but for groups, sign languages are preferred. @EdSignLectures @AnneliesKusters

Sujit shows: difficult concepts are possible to convey in ISL (Indian Sign Language), BSL and even in gestures only. Which is contrary to what (Deaf) people (used to?) believe - that gesture is ‘less’ than sign language. @EdSignLectures

Ishaare: in Indian there is no different word for gesture and sign language, but deaf people in India intuitively know that there is a difference in communication with hearing people (opposed to deaf ppl). @EdSignLectures

@AnneliesKusters taking us on a journey in how gestures are regarded in (sign) linguistics (and society): from ‘monkey language’, via the total ignoring of gestures (also in sign ling.) to research into the blurry lines between sign languages and gestures. @EdSignLectures

We can learn from the deaf community’s creativeness in our interpretations in theatre (which of course depends on the songs/play, available money, etc). @TerpTheatre @HeriotWattBSL @EdSignLectures

Always good to have a pool hall in the basement of your Deaf church - @mikegulliver dug up this pic of the old St Saviour's in Oxford Street

Societies thrive when institutions fan the flames of human interaction to inspire empowerment. As with hearing, so with Deaf - @mikegulliver
Examples of successful Deaf-led businesses can be found even in Victorian Britain, @mikegulliver's research shows, but so many barriers now.
The hidden history of Deaf ppl in the UK: not always so disabledbysociety, says @mikegulliver - empowered enough to be leading churches etc.
