There is something inhuman and terrible in that sentence.
I find myself mourning not only those Ukraine loses, but the West’s capacity to be shocked by their loss. We have grown blind and accustomed to what should remain unbearable.
The West sleeps. Ukraine stays awake - and continues to pay for our long refusal to see the world as it is.
