In 2011 James Richard Verone, fifty-nine and out of work after seventeen years on a job, walked into a Gastonia, North Carolina, bank, handed a teller a note demanding one dollar, then sat down and waited for the police.
He later said he had no insurance, chronic back and foot pain, and a growth on his chest he could not afford to have treated, and that jail looked like the only place he would see a doctor.
He did not try to leave with cash. He was arrested. The episode became a brief national story because it framed a crime as a door into a clinic.
His story went viral because it exposed a painful reality: some people can become so desperate for healthcare that even jail starts to look like an option.

Using ballooning, spiders can reach altitudes of up to 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) and travel hundreds of miles. They are often the first pioneers to colonize new volcanic islands and have even been found landing on ships in the middle of the ocean.
