As countries navigate competing health priorities and constrained budgets, economic evidence can help decision-makers understand not only what works, but also what it costs and what health benefits it delivers. That was the focus on Day 1 of the capacity building and dissemination workshop under the Wellcome Trust funded project, Enhancing the Use of Economic Evidence in Vaccine Policy Making in Africa (EEE-VPM) project. The meeting brought together colleagues from @VaccinesKenya and county health representatives from 10 counties that participated in data collection. 📌The goal was to strengthen the understanding and use of economic evidence to inform vaccine policy and investment decisions in Kenya and across Africa. The day's agenda was: 📰Introduction to economic evaluation: types of evaluation, perspectives and decision-making rules 💰Costing in healthcare: cost definitions, costing approaches and how to conduct a cost analysis ⚖️Measuring health outcomes: DALYs, QALYs and the challenges of measuring and using them 📈QALY measurement with the EQ-5D-5L: a group practical exercise calculating health-state index values using Kenyan data Participants were curious, asking questions, making comments and actively contributing during the sessions.

Generating cost-effectiveness evidence requires research infrastructure, and one key piece is a Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALY) value set. Few African countries have their own Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALY) value set, the country-specific weights that convert health states into QALYs, a generic measure of health benefit, a key input in cost-effectiveness analysis. Analysts often borrow weights from other settings that may not reflect local preferences. With support from @wellcometrust and the @EuroQol , @HERU_KEMRI_WT is working in Kenya, Zambia and Nigeria to develop country-specific value sets. I’m pleased to share the first output: the Nigerian EQ-5D-Y-3L value set, now published. Congratulations to @ObinnaProf , @HPRG_Nigeria Kenya and Zambia are next. link.springer.com/article/10…

The Clinical Information Network (CIN) held a Maternal and Newborn Quality of Care Feedback Report Stakeholder Co-Design Meeting as part of ongoing efforts to improve the relevance and utility of feedback reports for healthcare providers and other end users. The meeting brought together stakeholders to collaboratively design feedback reports that support quality improvement in maternal and newborn care, focusing on indicators that are meaningful, relevant, and actionable for healthcare providers, hospital managers, and other stakeholders. The CIN routinely generates and shares performance feedback reports with participating hospitals to support quality improvement efforts. The co-design process aims to ensure these reports better meet end users' needs and provide information to inform decision-making and drive improvements in care.
