A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqên County in Nagqu at 10:33 p.m. on October 22, killing at least 16 and injuring 76. More than 12,000 people were relocated. 🏔️
🌊 It comes not long after the Tibet-Nepal flash flood in August, when an ice-rock avalanche sent a wall of water through the Bhote Koshi gorge. Nepali media reported more than a thousand dead.
🏗️ Meanwhile, Beijing is pushing ahead with a massive hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo river, with 5 planned stations and several times the output of the Three Gorges dam. Work officially began in July 2025.
⚠️ Chinese geologists have reportedly raised concerns about active faults, landslides, and reservoir stability in the area. A Reuters investigation counted 68 large dams operating in the Himalayan region, with 101 more planned or under construction.

🚨 Russia’s neighbors are tightening health checks after a lab worker’s death in Siberia.
Mongolia ordered health surveillance at its Russian border. Kazakhstan introduced traveler screening at border crossings. Tajikistan began temperature checks and symptom questions for people crossing, and Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan also announced precautions.
The worry goes beyond Russia's neighbors.
A scholar in northeastern China, identified as Mr. Dong, told Radio Free Asia he is concerned about Russian transparency.
His view: Russia’s system “isn’t transparent,” and is not much different from China’s.
He says a naturally occurring plague is less frightening than an engineered one.
“If it’s an engineered virus, that’s terrifying.” Whether deliberately released or developed unintentionally, he says it would have the characteristics of a biological weapon.
