Did Black Holes Form Before Their Galaxies? The James Webb Space Telescope has found something unusual in the early universe. Astronomers studied a distant object called QSO1, which existed just 700 million years after the Big Bang. At its center is a black hole roughly 50 million times the mass of our Sun. What's surprising is how few stars appear to surround it. The black hole makes up most of the object's measured mass. Scientists are now trying to understand how such a massive black hole formed so early, and whether some black holes existed before their galaxies had fully developed.
