The paper detailing what I've spent most of my PhD working on was published today! doi.org/10.1042/BSR20231851
It highlights the utility of the AlphaFold2 algorithm and identifies several structural motifs in the G6PC2 protein critical for its function!
Returning to work today as Dr. Emily Hawes instead of as a PhD candidate. I am so thankful for everyone I got to work with throughout this process and am excited to start this next stage of my career!

Join us in two weeks as Emily Hawes (@EmilyMHawes), a graduate student in the lab of Richard O'Brien, presents her dissertation work on the "Regulation of Glucose-6-Phosphatase Catalytic Subunit 2 (G6PC2) Expression and Activity!"
My second first-author paper has officially been published in @JMolEndo!
The paper investigates how flux through different G6P pathways influence each other and suggests that G6PC2 inhibitors would not influence glucocorticoid signaling.

Me to my protein 😅 – at Hamilton Heights, Manhattan
This quoted post is unavailable.
I spent the last week attending my first in-person scientific conference (not hosted at Vanderbilt).
While I had heard fantastic things about @GordonConf, I wasn't prepared for the amazing science and networking this experience provided.
Hope to see you all again in 2 years! – at Barga, Toscana
Long experimental days aren't always the most joyful, but one perk is that I can finish entire audiobooks in one day!
Also my seminar flyer made me realize it's been a long while since I had a professional headshot done, so enjoy these updated photos courtesy of the new @VanderbiltU self-service machine.
I'm glad I got to present my work at seminar today. Thanks to everyone who attended and for the great questions and feedback!

I recently returned home from a 2+ week honeymoon trip to Europe. When applying to graduate school, this is something I would have thought impossible - no way could a grad student take that much time off. I've been reflecting on our trip and here are my thoughts..
Long story short, I had the most amazing honeymoon thanks to a wonderful support system who didn't let me believe that graduate school should be my only focus in life.
