Alhamdulillah.
I was stopped at the airport in France.
I will be deported tomorrow.
Soon they will also take my phone.
You can stop people but not ideas.
Remigration will happen in spite of that.

Bon courage a patriotes francais.

Sechs Namen in der Autorenzeile für solch ein peinliches Stück. Sowas gibt's nur in Deutschland Darüber lacht man sich seit Jahren außerhalb der deutschen Medienbubble kaputt.

My latest investigation is out. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a 13 y/o died days after being shot during protests against the removal of PTI’s provincial government. Our reporting investigates the human toll & examines the consequences for democracy amid a virtual media blackout there.

The Pakistani government’s removal of the country’s last opposition provincial government is the latest stage in a long-running confrontation between the military and former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Was für ein Schwachsinn. Typisch BHL.

Among the articles I edited at @DropSiteNews last week was a report from Sudan on a drone strike, apparently by RSF, that killed 26 women, four children, and two elders — the most thorough reporting on that murderous attack in the Anglophone press. You should read it, @LizHurra.
Replying to @OzKaterji
someone (can't recall their name or gender even) announced recently they're leaving the NYT to join DropSite. That was so bizarre. Leave the best paper in the world for an Iranian propaganda outlet? Who does that?
The best story I ever heard about, but never wrote down, is how Angelina Jolie came to Afghanistan to build a school. She was ripped off. Corrupt officials and contractors took a share, built an empty ghost school for some staged PR, and afterwards, nobody asked questions.

Stimmt.

A quarter-century after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan and five years since the return of the Taliban, what is the legacy of "America's longest war"?

🇦🇫 Five years after US forces left Afghanistan, rumors that Americans have quietly returned to Bagram Air Base are spreading across Kabul and the Afghan diaspora. Journalist Emran Feroz went to Bagram for Drop Site and found no sign of them.
Residents around the base told Feroz the only armed men going in and out are Taliban fighters. A Taliban intelligence officer escorting him was turned away at the gate as access is controlled by the Ministry of Defense, and that secrecy feeds the rumors.
Bagram has been hit since U.S. forces left: Pakistani airstrikes struck the base in late February and early March. Trump has also publicly said that he wants it back. Feroz also spoke with a Taliban official who says he was tortured at Bagram's US-run prison. The official confirmed that parts of the facility are still in use but would not say who is held there.

This week marks 25 years since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan, the beginning of what would become the longest war in U.S. history. “The war on terror is not over, especially since the U.S. withdrawal,” says Afghan Austrian journalist @Emran_Feroz. “A lot of airstrikes are still taking place, especially in the last weeks and months, and all these airstrikes are being conducted by the Pakistani military regime, which kind of took over America's role and is now using the same war-on-terror arguments that we heard for 20 years again to hit Afghan civilians.“

August Hanning served as chief of Germany's spy service from 1999 to 2005. 1999 was when an Iraqi source codenamed named "Curveball" surfaced in Germany and began claiming Saddam Hussein had active WMD programs. All of it turned out to be spectacularly false.
Worth examining if in addition to stealing intelligence and handing it to "foreign countries," any "foreign countries" were feeding him intelligence to shape the Western narrative.
It's October 7th. 25 years ago, the War on Terror in Afghanistan started, and it didn't stop until today. My piece for @truthout.
truthout.org/articles/the-wa…
Deutschland geht gerade international unter. Wo sind die Sondersendungen? Oder gibt's so etwas nur bei Ahmad aber nicht bei August?
The arrest of August #Hanning, #BND president from 1998 to 2005, has sharpened long-standing doubts in #London about sharing secrets with #Germany’s foreign intelligence service.
- Investigators believe Hanning spent 16 years after leaving office collecting highly sensitive material—situation assessments, partner-agency documents, and papers on the Iranian nuclear programme and the Russian military—and selling some of it to an undisclosed foreign power.
- British agencies are said to be checking whether their own material or personnel were compromised.
- US agencies are reportedly reviewing what they shared with European partners over the same period.
- This is the latest symptom of a deeper problem:
- After the Cold War, Berlin took a deep “peace dividend.” Defense spending fell from about 3.9 % of government outlays in 1991 to roughly 1.1 % of GDP by 2014.
- The BND was left underfunded and tightly constrained; until reforms this summer, officers could not fire service weapons, sabotage abroad, or spread disinformation. A later chief compared the service to Gulliver “tied up with a thousand threads.”
- Post-Gestapo and post-Stasi politics produced heavy oversight. After Snowden, a 2016 law restricted sharing with the #UK and #US, and a 2020 court ruling made foreign interception much harder.
- Failures reinforced the “weak link” label: the BND missed the 2022 invasion; officer Carsten Linke was arrested in late 2022 for allegedly passing #Ukraine secrets to Moscow; a 2024 air-force call leaked on Russian television exposed British personnel in Ukraine.
- Merz has raised the BND budget by about a quarter to €1.51 billion and granted limited sabotage and weapons powers.
- Is it late?
- I think it is, but better late than later.
- Is it enough?
- Probably not.
- Germany has to meet the foriegn end of #Russia’s hybrid campaign, Chinese collection, #Iran's plots against dissidents and Jewish targets, #ISIS infiltrations and #Hamas attack planning at the same time, and none of those threats is shrinking. Intelligence is slow, highly specialized, labour-intensive work. You cannot recruit, clear and train a service on demand, or rebuild source networks and technical capacity that were run down for decades.
- Funding is only half the problem. The other half is people like Hanning: a former chief now accused of collecting and selling secrets long after he left office, on top of a serving officer already charged with passing Ukraine material to Moscow. Extra money and new powers do not restore a service partners already treat as porous.
- This is a cautionary tale for much of #Europe: a starved service is a liability, and a penetrated one is worse.
