Good to see opposition to @Lana_Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General. It would be disgraceful to choose someone like her who has been knee-deep in bloodshed in both Sudan and Yemen, who is inimical to UN values. But I still fear the U.S. and Russia will try to push her through.
UN Security Council 7th straw poll preliminary results:
Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica: 11 encourage, 4 discourage, 0 no opinion
Rafael Grossi of Argentina: 9 encourage, 4 discourage, 2 no opinion
Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett of Guyana: 8 encourage, 6 discourage, 1 no opinion
Lana Nusseibeh of UAE: 7 encourage, 6 discourage, 2 no opinion

🔺Fact: the @UN and the US determined that genocide is occurring in Sudan at the hands of the #RSF.
🔺Fact: The UAE provides weapons and attack drones to the RSF, according to the United Nations.
🔺Fact: A bipartisan coalition in Congress wrote to the NBA, asking them why they are still taking money from the UAE in light of the genocidal militia they sponsor.
Tell the Knicks, tell the NBA: drop the UAE as a sponsor support.refugeesinternationa…

One year ago, the world ignored warnings of an attack on El Fasher. Sudanese civilians paid the price of that decision.
@JeremyKonyndyk & @EndGenocideDan went to Sudan and spoke with survivors of the massacre, who continue to share their stories.
Will the world finally listen?

‘The appointment of Nusseibeh, who has been the face of the UAE’s Sudan strategy, would be a slap in the face to the millions of people suffering the horrors of war, and a dereliction of duty towards those thousands who have already been killed.’

August 25 marks nine years since the Myanmar military launched a genocidal attack against the Rohingya population in Rakhine State.
"We want to go back to our home, to our country. We want justice, and we want our rights to be restored," says Hazera Khatu, a Rohingya genocide survivor and refugee in Bangladesh.
Nine years on, justice and accountability remain out of reach. The U.N. member states should take action to end impunity and ensure lifesaving support for Rohingya refugees.

An RSF attack on El Obeid could put 500,000+ people at risk, including 100,000 internally displaced people in the city.
If El Obeid falls like El Fasher, the UAE cannot claim that the outcome was beyond its control.

The @NBA is partnering with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on a $300M deal while Sudan burns. No matter who wins the NBA Finals, the people of Sudan lose.

🧵1/ The NBA should divest from the UAE until it ends support for the RSF in Sudan. Sudan is facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises: more than 11 million people displaced, widespread atrocities, and millions facing hunger and famine.

The @NBA is suddenly changing course. For 75 years, NBA players and coaches have stood up against injustice. But today, the NBA has a $300M sponsorship with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE also sponsors a genocidal militia in Sudan with weapons & drones that kill civilians.

Blood on the Basketball: The NBA Must End Its Deal With the UAE as the Sudan Genocide Worsens
The UAE has been accused of supporting the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary, which has committed some of the worst atrocities in Sudan's three-year civil war.

NEW: Colombian private military contractors, apparently hired by a United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based company, transited through UAE military bases before being deployed to Sudan to support the abusive Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
This is further evidence indicating that the UAE is assisting or otherwise substantially contributing to the Rapid Support Forces’ capacity to commit war crimes.
