As a syndicated show, each TNG episode had to be standalone (two-parters excepted) so that viewers could enter the series at any point. Thus instead of the long character-development arcs of later “prestige” TV you got compact stories, often centred on a moral dilemma like this one. Not all of the stories worked, but those that did could be extraordinary.

People who use AI regularly massively overestimate how much everyone else uses it. They’re always so smug with the “if you hate AI, I hope you’re not using it to reply to your emails” argument. And I’m always like, yeah… I’m not. That’s exactly the point!
