QUALITATIVE SOCIOLOGISTS: Need advice! Emily Shafer and I are using what people typed into a text box on a survey as qualitative data. What should we do when quoting them in a Soc paper? Correct misspellings, typos, "bad grammar? Put it as they typed it? With or w/o "sic"?
A masterful and wonderful and sociologist has died: Ivan Szelenyi. He came from Hungary (once jailed for what he wrote), went to Australia, then worked at Wisconsin, UCLA, Yale, and then was the founding Dean of Social Science (the position I now hold) at NYU Abu Dhabi. RIP.

Has anyone left from JFK's Terminal 4 in recent days that can report on how long TSA waits are? Are Pre-Check lines shorter? I'm leaving Saturday night and trying to figure out how long I can stay at the No Kings March in NYC.
Love this guy and his straight-forward message that maybe you like me need to hear anytime!
The Compassionate Mind - In this short clip His Holiness the Dalai Lama explains why developing a compassionate mind is essential for inner peace and human happiness. When our thoughts are dominated by self-centered attitudes, fear, anger, jealousy, and distrust naturally arise. But when we cultivate genuine concern for the well-being of others, our hearts open and our minds become more transparent, honest, and peaceful. Video was originally recorded on November 19, 2010.

My friend and coauthor, sociologist George Farkas, passed away last night of brain cancer. I remember our weekly meetings while we wrote Households, Employment, and Gender. We'd jog then work for hours. He taught me fixed effects. RIP my friend.

I know it's a weird time to be posting new WPs, but I have a new one on TikTok and the 2024 US elections (arxiv.org/abs/2501.17831). In short, we find that the TikTok algorithm recommended Republican content much more than Dem content.
