"You cannot tell me that the same country that gave us the awesome spoons gave us the worst chopsticks."
"Can I get desserts that aren't recycled from waste?"
"Affirmative. You can choose items formed from red bean paste or marzipan."
"...I'm thinking..."
The Captain is not British, we simply don't have the processing power to properly un-French his accent.
"Garak Bots, what I want to know is, out of all the medical reports you provided me, which ones are true and which ones aren't?"
"They are all true."
"Even the hallucinations?"
"Especially the hallucinations."
87 is a long fife , Dad took a bad fall in his independent living parking lot a couple days ago, 5 hours away from me, where he lives near my brother. He divorced my mom when me and my brother were little, and remarried, cross country, and like many kids of divorce, we ended up not knowing him all that well into adulthood. A few years ago after being widowed, he chose to move near my brother. We speculate it may have been advice after a diagnosis, but we don't know. He had a slow decline for a few years, still driving, still being social and independent in his new place. Made it clear to my brother that if he was ever unable to drive or live independently, he would rather just end it, and have his ashes on mantle next to his wife, and there was DNR. Lately he could only barely drive, and all his affairs were handled by my brother. Well, it was such a hard fall face and ribs, breathing, swallowing, awareness, that possibility of that lifestyle was immediately taken away even if he could have recovered. Passed in the night before the day's arrangements for longer-term care could be put in place. It kind of matches his wishes when he had discussed all this with my brother in his more cognitively good years. So yeah, the melancholy is mixed with a sort of relief for my brother and my Dad, if that makes sense. This is a bit TMI for a parody account, but the fact that cognition is involved in Sir Pat's case, on an account where I post his work, well, here we are.
It's melancholy but not heartbreaking so don't feel too bad for me, a stranger. While he was still able to recognize me, last year, my mother his ex wife of all people drove 5 hours to pick him up and bring him back to her house. We live in SE TX area. And she brought him to my house and he got to see how my family lives, and we also went to Galveston, Gaidos, the ferry, Bolivar, and he got to look once again on the Coast Guard where he was stationed where he met my mom on a blind date. He was a real trooper, holding it together even though I know it was hot and he had a hinky hip and was kind of checked-out at times. But I got to remember him in a good way.
