“The group was a lifeline for me.”
When Oliver was just eight, his mum Wendy unexpectedly collapsed at home. He called an ambulance, helping to save her life.
As Wendy’s health became more complex, Oliver became her main carer balancing school with helping with washing, cooking and cleaning, and making sure his mum did her physio. He worried about her health and sometimes found it difficult to concentrate at school.
At 11, Oliver joined a local young carers group through our network. Being with other young people who understood what life was like gave him a much-needed break from caring. He made friends, took part in activities and had support when he needed it.
Now 16, Oliver is a confident young man and a voice for other young carers.
🎙️ Comedian @jennyeclair presented the @BBCRadio4 Appeal on behalf of Carers Trust.
A donation could support more young carers. Around £25 can provide two young carers with an evening at a group like the one that was a lifeline for Oliver.

Have your say on proposed changes to school exclusions in England 📣
The government is seeking views on proposals to:
- Introduce a clear, time-limited framework for internal suspensions.
- Improve support for pupils returning to school after suspension.
- Ensure schoolwork is provided during the first five days of suspension or permanent exclusion.
Through our specialist education helpline, we know children with SEND are often wrongfully excluded because their needs aren’t properly supported.
Contact will be responding to help ensure these proposals work for children with SEND. Your views matter too.

Hope for families as Prime Minister addresses locked Child Trust Funds at PMQs 🔏
There was a welcome boost for families of disabled young people yesterday as the Prime Minister addressed the issue of locked Child Trust Funds during Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).
Responding to a question from Sarah Smith MP, the PM acknowledged the unnecessary hurdles parent carers are facing. He confirmed that ministers are reviewing the system and aim to set out a response within weeks.
