National Drought Group met to discuss the challenges farmers have faced this summer. We heard how on-farm reservoirs are helping some manage hot, dry weather by storing water from wetter months. As our climate changes, farmers will need to consider their future water needs.

Cutting grass is one of the many ways we can reduce flood risk. Regular close mowing helps protect embankments from external erosion and improve the grass’ erosion resistance. Using a robo-mower helps us get better cut quicker, as it can also cut in reverse.

We recently took invertebrate drought samples along the River Trent. We learn a lot about the condition of the river through what invertebrates we find. This is one of the many ways we are closely monitoring the impact drought is having on the environment.
