What happens to a society when it can no longer trust its own language?
Arundhati Roy put that question to the People’s AI Assembly, held by @AINowInstitute at Webster Hall in New York. Reading from “Apocalypse Now and Then”, her new essay in @Equatormag, she said: “I believe that disrupting and vitiating the fundamental relationship between humans and language will undermine all semblance of social coherence.” She shared the stage with @NaomiAKlein , and @_KarenHao , author of Empire of AI, moderated.
Roy told the audience that India has “no anti-AI movement” and is “gearing up to be one of the greatest suppliers of data of all time”. The attitude at home, she said, is: “Please bring your toxic waste to us.”
Klein argued that AI is spreading because so many people are already trying to get out of lives that feel impossible. “The bots are just the closers in a bad deal stretching back decades,” she said.

“Those in the West who want to see change in Palestine need to confront the question of how international pressure might alter the political calculations of Israeli voters and leaders. Sanctions, diplomatic isolation, divestment, sports boycotts and travel restrictions are among the measures that could make the continuation of occupation and denial of Palestinian rights carry a tangible cost.”

Zionist historian Colin Shindler takes exception to Benjamin Moser’s Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History.
Instead of indulging Colin's kvetch, try this lovely piece by Ben from last year:

Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History by Benjamin Moser is a one-dimensional appraisal of the Jewish people’s broken home.

“Israeli liberals and Western allies still want to pin everything on Netanyahu. But whoever wins, the apartheid consensus will endure”
(Spare yourself from Canadian punditry and read this from @Equatormag)

Netanyahu is short of a majority – but his opponents, who campaigned on saving democracy, can’t replace him without the Arab parties they refuse to govern with. For now, the apartheid consensus holds.
This is what @NathanThrall told Equator before the vote:
“The West Bank and Gaza have reached their present condition not despite Western policy, but in significant part because of it.”

"If those calls are heeded, Israel will have bought itself more time to consolidate its control over Palestinian land and lives, Palestinians will continue to be subjugated and strangled, and Western leaders will be able to avoid questions of complicity and accountability"
Reading the Western reporting from the campaign trail in Israel, you can see the return of a fantasy: that our wayward ally might become a normal country overnight by ejecting the one man who caused all the trouble. For @equatormag, I asked @NathanThrall how to read the result:

.@NathanThrall on Israel's election and the consensus that endures no matter who wins: "The question of whether millions of Palestinians should continue to live under Israeli domination has been effectively removed from the range of legitimate political choices." @Equatormag
