International Internet Day is observed each year on October 29. The date commemorates October 29, 1969, when the first message was transmitted over ARPANET, the experimental network funded by the U.S. Department of Defense that laid the groundwork for today's Internet. The message was sent from a computer at the University of California, Los Angeles, to another at the Stanford Research Institute. It was intended to read "LOGIN," but the system crashed after the first two letters, so the first message ever sent across the network was simply "LO." In the decades that followed, ARPANET expanded and new technologies emerged. The adoption of the TCP/IP protocols in 1983 allowed separate networks to interconnect, and Tim Berners-Lee's invention of the World Wide Web in 1989 made the Internet accessible to ordinary people. What began as a modest research project has since become one of the most transformative inventions in human history. Today, the Internet underpins nearly every aspect of modern life. It enables instant communication across continents, gives students access to knowledge once confined to libraries and lecture halls, and allows small businesses to reach global markets. It supports remote work, online banking, telemedicine, and digital government services. During crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, it kept schools, workplaces, and healthcare systems functioning when physical contact was impossible. The Internet has also strengthened freedom of expression and civic participation, giving individuals a platform to share ideas, organize communities, and hold institutions accountable. Despite its achievements, the Internet's benefits are not shared equally. A significant portion of the world's population remains offline, often because of limited infrastructure, high costs, or a lack of digital skills. This digital divide deepens existing inequalities in education, health, and economic opportunity. ⚡Other pressing concerns include⚡ : 👉Privacy and data protection: Safeguarding personal information in an era of large-scale data collection. 👉Cybersecurity : Defending individuals, businesses, and critical infrastructure against cyber threats. 👉Misinformation : Countering false and misleading content while preserving open discourse. 👉Online safety : Protecting children and vulnerable users from harassment, exploitation, and abuse. 👉Digital literacy : Equipping people with the skills to use technology critically and responsibly. International Internet Day invites us to reflect on how far connectivity has come and how much remains to be done. Ensuring that the Internet remains open, secure, and accessible to everyone requires cooperation among governments, the private sector, civil society, and individual users. As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence continue to reshape the digital landscape, the responsibility to guide their development ethically and inclusively grows ever more important. On this day, we celebrate the extraordinary achievement of a connected world, and we renew our commitment to building an Internet that serves all of humanity. #InternationalInternetDay #Internet

On these days in 1863, the International Conference of Geneva met to improve the care of soldiers wounded in war. It is regarded as a turning point in the formation of the International Red Cross Movement and the development of international humanitarian law. The idea began with Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman who witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in 1859. He described the suffering of thousands of wounded soldiers left without care in his book A Memory of Solferino (1862). The book led to the creation of a five-member committee in Geneva, which became the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the committee called the 1863 conference. Delegates from several European states and aid organizations agreed on key principles : 👉Every country should form a national relief society to support military medical services in wartime. 👉Medical personnel and volunteers helping the wounded should be recognized and respected. 👉A uniform distinctive sign, a red cross on a white background, should identify relief workers. These decisions paved the way for the first Geneva Convention in 1864, the foundation of modern humanitarian law protecting the wounded and those who care for them. The red crescent was later adopted as an additional emblem, and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies now operate worldwide. 🌍 Even in the midst of war, humanity must not become a casualty. Protecting the wounded, respecting human dignity, and working to reduce the suffering of civilians and the injured are fundamental principles of international humanitarian law. Remembering this historic event is a chance to reaffirm that even in the hardest circumstances, humanity must be preserved. @ICRC #GenevaConference #RedCross #RedCrescent #HumanitarianLaw #InternationalHumanitarianLaw #HumanitarianHistory

#DisarmamentWeek: A Call for Peace and Collective Security Every year, from 24 to 30 October, the international community observes World Disarmament Week, a time to reaffirm our shared commitment to a world free from the threat of weapons of mass destruction and the unchecked proliferation of arms. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1978, Disarmament Week encourages governments, civil society organizations, educators, and individuals to promote awareness of the dangers posed by the arms race and the importance of disarmament in sustaining international peace and security. The resources devoted to armaments are immense, and they come at a profound human cost. Funds that could advance education, healthcare, and sustainable development are instead directed toward weapons that endanger lives and destabilize societies. Genuine security cannot be built on the accumulation of arms; it is built on trust, dialogue, and cooperation among nations. On this occasion, we call upon states to honor their disarmament obligations, to strengthen existing treaties, and to pursue diplomacy over confrontation. We also encourage every citizen to take part by learning, speaking out, and supporting efforts to build a more peaceful world. The generations that follow us deserve to inherit a world defined not by the fear of conflict, but by the promise of peace. #DisarmamentWeek #WorldDisarmamentWeek #Peace #Disarmament #GlobalSecurity

Observed each year on 24 October, the International Day of Climate Action traces its origins to 2009, when thousands of events were held in well over a hundred countries to call for urgent, science-based action on the climate crisis. It remains a reminder that climate action is not the work of governments alone, but a movement carried by communities across the world. Decades of scientific research confirm that human activity, above all the burning of fossil fuels, is warming the planet. The consequences are already visible: more frequent heatwaves, severe floods and droughts, rising sea levels, threatened food and water security, and growing pressure on ecosystems and livelihoods. These effects fall hardest on communities that have contributed least to the problem. The Paris Agreement of 2015 set the goal of limiting global warming to well below 2°C, while pursuing efforts to keep it to 1.5°C. Meeting this goal requires deep and rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, a just transition to clean energy, and substantial support for adaptation, particularly in vulnerable and developing countries. Renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, the protection of forests and oceans, and climate-resilient agriculture are proven pathways. Their success depends on political will, responsible investment, innovation, and international cooperation grounded in fairness and shared responsibility. Businesses can decarbonize their operations and supply chains. Cities can plan for resilience and clean mobility. Educators and young people can raise awareness and demand accountability. Individuals can make informed choices about energy, consumption, and waste, and can add their voices to calls for change. The decisions made in this decade will shape the conditions of life for generations to come. On this day, let us renew our commitment to ambition, solidarity, and action, so that future generations inherit a stable climate and a thriving planet. #ClimateActionDay #InternationalDayOfClimateAction #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ParisAgreement #SustainableFuture #InternationalDayofClimateAction

In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly designated 24 October as a day to bring the challenges of development to the attention of the world's public, and to promote the international cooperation needed to address them. More than five decades later, its central insight endures: people cannot shape a future they do not understand, and communities cannot claim opportunities they do not know exist. Behind every successful development effort stands a chain of communication. A farmer who receives timely weather and market information can protect a harvest. A mother who understands vaccination schedules can safeguard her child's health. A young person who learns of a scholarship can change the course of a life. Information, in this sense, is not a by-product of development; it is one of its most powerful instruments. Today, the world produces more information than at any point in history, yet its benefits are unevenly shared. Limited infrastructure, high costs, language barriers, and gaps in digital skills continue to exclude large segments of humanity, particularly women, rural communities, older persons, and those living in poverty. Where information is scarce, inequality tends to deepen. Access alone is not enough. Information must also be accurate, relevant, and trustworthy. Independent media, open government data, and strong public statistical systems build the trust on which cooperation depends, while media and information literacy equips people to distinguish reliable sources from falsehoods. New technologies, including artificial intelligence and satellite-based data, offer unprecedented tools for monitoring progress, anticipating crises, and targeting assistance where it is needed most. Their promise will be realized only if they are guided by transparency, privacy protection, inclusiveness, and respect for human rights. Governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals each have a part to play: expanding connectivity, publishing open data, supporting local-language content, and safeguarding the freedom to seek and share information. Development is, at its heart, a collective endeavor, and collective endeavors depend on shared understanding. On this day, let us renew our resolve to ensure that knowledge is a right enjoyed by all, and not a privilege held by a few. #WorldDevelopmentInformationDay #InformationForDevelopment #DigitalInclusion #OpenData #MediaLiteracy #LeaveNoOneBehind #WDIMyk2026

On 24 October 1945, the Charter of the @UN entered into force, giving institutional form to a hope shared by a world weary of war: that nations could settle their differences through law and dialogue rather than force. Eighty-one years later, United Nations Day invites us to reflect on how far that promise has carried us, and how much work remains. Across more than eight decades, the United Nations has helped to prevent and resolve conflicts, deployed peacekeepers to some of the world's most fragile regions, and provided food, shelter, and medical care to millions displaced by war and disaster. It has given the world the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, supported decolonization, led global campaigns against disease, and set the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a shared roadmap for people and planet. The present moment is marked by serious tests: prolonged armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate change, widening inequality, rapid technological change, and the erosion of public trust amid misinformation. None of these can be addressed by a single nation acting alone. They demand coordinated action, shared responsibility, and institutions capable of bringing diverse voices to the same table. The strength of the United Nations lies in its universality. It offers every state, large or small, a place to be heard, and it provides a common framework of norms and obligations that protects the vulnerable and restrains the powerful. Reform and renewal are necessary to ensure that the Organization remains effective and representative, yet the principle at its core, that cooperation serves humanity better than confrontation, remains as relevant as ever. The United Nations is not only an assembly of governments. It is also an ideal that belongs to educators, young people, civil society, businesses, and ordinary citizens. Every act of tolerance, every effort to protect the environment, every defense of human dignity contributes to the purposes set out in the Charter. On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to peace, justice, and international cooperation. May we honor the founding vision of 1945 not only through words, but through action, for the sake of present and future generations. #UNDay #UnitedNationsDay #GlobalCooperation #HumanRights #SustainableDevelopment #Peace
